BMW N13 Engine (2011-16)


The N13 was BMW’s turbocharged version of the 1.6-litre ‘Prince’ four-cylinder petrol engine which it developed in conjunction with PSA Peugeot Citroen. With its 77.0 mm bore and 84.8 mm stroke, the N13B16 engine had a capacity of 1598 cc.

The N13 had a two-piece crankcase and bedplate that were made from die-cast aluminium. Beyond this, the N13 engine featured direct injection via high pressure, solenoid valve injectors (BMW’s ‘High Precision Injection’, or HPI), double overhead camshafts, variable intake and exhaust camshaft timing (double VANOS), four valves per cylinder, variable intake valve lift (Valvetronic) and a compression ratio of 10.5:1.

The N13 replaced BMW’s N43 engine, though production of the N13 is expected to end by 2016. The N13 engine will effectively be replaced by the B37, B38 and B48 engines.
