VW admits V6 diesel engines cheat emissions tests

After its initial denials, Volkswagen AG has admitted that its 3.0-litre diesel V6 engines have "defeat devices" which enable them to perform differently during emissions tests in order to meet NOx standards. Furthermore, Volkswagen has admitted that the "defeat devices" apply to all its 3.0-litre diesel V6 engines from model years 2009 to 2016, including Audi and Porsche models.

Kia's fourth-generation Optima sedan is now available in Australia. The Optima range consists of Si and GT variants, powered by 2.4-litre petrol and 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines, respectively. List prices for the Optima Si and Optima GT are $34,490 and $43,990, respectively (excludes on-road costs).

The Range Rover Evoque Convertible will be available in Australia from the third quarter of 2016. The all-wheel drive Range Rover Evoque Convertible will be powered by 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and diesel engines that are mated to nine-speed ZF automatic transmissions. According to Land Rover, the Range Rover Evoque Convertible is the world's first luxury compact SuV convertible. For Australia, prices will start at $84,440.

Porsche 911 Carrera goes biturbo

Porsche has announced that its 991 Series II (991.II) 911 Carrera range will be powered by 3.0-litre biturbo horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engines. The new biturbo engines bring more power and improved fuel economy: peak outputs for the 911 Carrera will be 272kW and 450Nm (compared to 257kW and 390Nm for the current 3.4-litre engine), while the 911 Carrera S will produce 309kW and 500Nm (compared to 294kW and 440Nm for the current 3.8-litre engine).

BMW has unveiled its new G11/G12 7-Series sedan. Significantly, the G11/G12 7-Series features a 'Carbon Core' chassis which combines carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) with steel and aluminium to achieve mass reductions of up to 130 kg relative to its predecessor. Furthermore, the G11/G12 7-Series introduces new B57D30 and B58B30 turbocharged diesel and petrol engines.

BMW has released the first images of its second-generation X1 SUV. Commencing production in October 2015 and expected to be released in Australia later this year, the X1 will be manufactured at BMW's Regensburg plant in Germany and powered by BMW's B47 diesel and B48 petrol engines.
