Recalls: Honda GM2 City
Overview
Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.
Recalls: Honda GM2 City
Honda GM2 City: engine may stall and not restart
In February 2011, a recall was issued for Honda GM2 City vehicles due to insufficient lubrication of the sliding portion between the lost motion spring and rocker arm for high surface pressures at low engine speeds. This could potentially cause the auxiliary spring to break during usage, resulting in the engine stalling and failing to restart (PRA 2011/12369). The recalled vehicles were in the following VIN ranges:
- MRHGM26609P050028 to MRHGM26609P051257;
- MRHGE88509P040003 to MRHGE88509P042866;
- MRHGE88609P060009 to MRHGE88609P061304;
- MRHGE8850AP040047 to MRHGE8850AP040913; and,
- MRHGE8850AP070035 to MRHGE8850AP070080.
2009 model year Honda GM2 City: Takata airbag recall #1
In May 2015, a recall was issued for 2009 model year Honda GM2 City vehicles and this recall was updated with new information in September 2017. In these vehicles, propellant wafers in the passenger’s front airbag inflator could absorb moisture over time. This ‘moisture intrusion’ made the inflator assembly susceptible to rupture during airbag deployment, creating a risk that metallic fragments could be projected through the cabin – these posed a risk of serious injury and fatality for vehicle occupants. 2009-12 model year Honda GM2 City: Takata airbag recall #2
In July 2015, a recall was issued for 2009-2012 model year Honda GM2 City vehicles and this recall was updated in September 2017 with new information. In these vehicles, the driver’s airbag may contain propellant wafers of insufficient density. As a result, the combustion rate of the propellant may increase inside the inflator, causing internal pressure to rise suddenly during airbag deployment. Such deployment could cause the inflator housing to rupture and metal fragments to scatter, posing a risk of injury to occupants. 2012 model year Honda GM2 City: Takata airbag recall #3
In February 2016, a recall was issued for 2012 model year Honda City vehicles and this recall was updated in September 2017 with new information. In these vehicles, the driver’s s front airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure upon deployment. If an affected airbag deployed, the increased internal pressure could cause the inflator to rupture and metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion – this posed a risk of serious injury or fatality to vehicle occupants. 2009-11 model year Honda GM2 City: Takata airbag recall #4
In July 2016, a recall was issued for 2009 to 2011 model year Honda City vehicles and this recall was updated with new information in September 2017. In these vehicles, propellant wafers in the airbag inflators could absorb moisture over time and cause overly aggressive combustion if the airbag was deployed. This, in turn, would create excessive internal pressure that could cause the airbag inflator housing to rupture and scatter metal fragments through the airbag cushion material; these scattered fragments could cause serious and potentially fatal injuries to vehicle occupants. 2012 model year Honda GM2 City: Takata airbag recall #5
In January 2017, a recall was issued for 2012 model year Honda GM2 City vehicles and this recall was updated with new information in September 2017. In these vehicles, propellant wafers within the front passenger airbag were susceptible to moisture intrusion over time. In the event of an airbag deployment, this could cause overly aggressive combustion of the airbag such that the airbag inflator housing could rupture. If this occurred, metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion material and scatter throughout the cabin, posing a risk of serious injury or fatality to vehicle occupants. 2009 model year Honda GM2 City: Takata airbag recall #6
In July 2019, recall campaign 6CE was issued for 2009 model year Honda GM2 City vehicles. These vehicles had Takata front passenger airbags and propellant wafers inside these airbags could absorb moisture over time. In the event of airbag deployment, excessive pressure in the airbag inflator housing could cause it to rupture and metal fragments could be projected through the airbag cushion and into the vehicle’s cabin. 2009-12 model year Honda GM2 City: Takata airbag recall #7
In October 2019, recall campaign 6XH was issued for 2009-12 model year Honda GM2 City vehicles. These vehicles had Takata driver airbags that contained propellant wafers which could absorb moisture over time. In the event of airbag deployment, excessive pressure in the airbag inflator housing could cause it to rupture so that metal fragments could be projected through the airbag cushion into the vehicle’s cabin. Problems and faults: Honda GM2 City
- The air conditioning (blower) motor may only work on high speed. If so, an improved motor along with a new blower resistor must be installed.
- The front armrests may crack over time, requiring the door panels to be replaced.
- The driver information display may report better fuel economy than actual; this could be fixed by reprogramming the module.
