Recalls: Mercedes-Benz W163 M-Class

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: Mercedes-Benz W163 M-Class

  • In November 1999, a recall was issued for Mercedes-Benz W163 ML 320 and ML 430 models manufactured prior to August 1999 for a front seat belt that may not fully engage (PRA 1999/4171).
  • In August 2003, a recall was issued for Mercedes-Benz W163 M-Class vehicles for power steering failure due to the possible fitment of an oversize clamp to the power steering cooler hose connection; this could result in a leak and diminished power steering effect over time (PRA 2003/6393).
  • In October 2011, a recall was issued for Mercedes-Benz W163 M-Class vehicles that were manufactured between August 1999 and June 2004. In these vehicles, a faulty brake light switch may lead to the cruise control not disengaging when the brake pedal was tapped. Cruise control, however, could still be disengaged via the cruise control lever or by applying the brakes fully. Nonetheless, failure of the cruise control to disengage could lead to a serious accident (PRA 2011/122885).

Problems and faults: Mercedes-Benz W163 M-Class

  • Squealing noises from the brakes – particularly in cold and damp weather – may be due to incompatibility between the brake pads and rotors; revised pads were subsequently released.
  • The ‘check engine’ light may illuminate due to the white plastic gas tank vent valve failing.
  • The ‘low range’ warning light may illuminate in cold weather due to a faulty control module.
  • Knocking noises from the accessory drive belt or water pump may be caused by the idler pulley not providing even tension; revised, smaller diameter pulleys were subsequently released.
  • The engine may run rough, misfire or stall due a damaged mass-airflow sensor (MAF) – this damage could be caused by dirt passing the air filter because of a damaged gasket, loose cover or improperly installed air filter.
  • After re-fueling, the fuel gauge may not provide a full reading due to a faulty fuel-sending unit.
  • For early models, engine oil may weep from the head gasket.
