Recalls: Nissan GU Patrol cab chassis

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: Nissan GU Patrol cab chassis

1998-99 Nissan GU/Y61 Patrol: underbody panels to be removed

In March 2000, a recall was issued for Nissan GU Patrol cab chassis vehicles so that the underbody panels could be removed to prevent that from collecting flammable materials such as grass (PRA 2000/4255). The recalled vehicles were manufactured from December 1998 to November 1999 and had VINs in the following ranges:

  • JN1UCLY61A0 500101 to 501592; and,
  • JN1UCNY61A0 000101 to 002847.

1999-00 Nissan GU/Y61 Patrol: incorrectly installed brake pedal

In March 2000, a recall was issued for Nissan GU Patrol cab chassis vehicles due to an incorrectly installed brake pedal since the brake pedal pivot pin may not have been crimped at one end (PRA 2000/4254). The recalled vehicles were manufactured from March 1999 to January 2000 and had VINs in the following ranges:

  • JN1UCLY61A0 500780 to 501636; and,
  • JN1UCNY61A0 001041 to 002904.

Nissan GU/Y61 Patrol: potential steering failure

In March 2000, a recall was issued for Nissan GU Patrol cab chassis vehicles due to potential steering failure caused by the lock-nut which secured the front steering linkage (drag link) loosening in severe driving conditions, e.g. off-road or unmade roads (PRA 2000/4253). The recalled vehicles were manufactured from December 1998 to January 2000 and had VINs in the following ranges:

  • JN1UCLY61AO 500101 to 501856; and,
  • JN1UCNY61AO 000101 to 003161.

2006-13 Nissan GU/Y61 Patrol: loss of power

In September 2013, a recall was issued for GU (Y61) Patrol that was available for sale from 1 June 2006 to 30 July 2013. Due to lateral load on the accelerator pedal, the contact pressure of the sensor brush to a terminal on the circuit board of the sensor may deteriorate. As a result, the engine Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) would illuminate and the vehicle could go into fail-safe mode, causing the accelerator operation control to limit vehicle acceleration. In extreme cases when the engine is idling or the vehicle is coming to a halt, air intake may be insufficient and the engine may stop running. As such, the sudden loss or reduction in power may pose a hazard to the vehicle occupants and other road users (PRA 2013/13761). The affected vehicles were in the following VIN ranges:

  • JN1TESY61A0 395001 to 427061;
  • JN1UELY61A0 680001 to 681762;
  • JN1UENY61A0 660001 to 660519;
  • JN1UERY61A0 600002 to 600011; and,
  • JN1UETY61A0 600002 to 600166.

2001-03 Nissan GU/Y61 Patrol: Takata airbag recall #1

In April 2013, a recall was issued for Nissan GU/Y61 Patrol vehicles due to airbag inflators containing propellant wafers of insufficient density. As a result, the combustion rate of the propellant may increase inside the inflator, causing internal pressure to rise suddenly during airbag deployment. Such deployment could cause the inflator housing to rupture and metal fragments to scatter (PRA 2013/13542). In June 2016, this recall was amended to cover vehicles that were manufactured between April 2001 and June 2003 (PRA 2016/16182).

2003 Nissan GU/Y61 Patrol: Takata airbag recall #2

In June 2015, a recall was issued for Nissan GU/Y61 Patrol vehicles that were manufactured between April 2003 and December 2003 – this recall was an amendment to previous recalls that were issued in 2013 and 2016. In these vehicles, the front passenger air bag inflator may have been assembled with improperly manufactured propellant wafers. In the event of a collision, the combustion rate of the propellant may increase inside the inflator, causing internal pressure to rise suddenly during airbag deployment. Such deployment could cause the inflator housing to rupture and disperse metal fragments, increasing the risk of injury to the occupant. The recalled Nissan GU/Y61 Patrol vehicles had VINs in the range JN1T*SY61A0345531 to JN1T*SY61A0353067 (PRA 2015/16751).

2004-07 Nissan GU/Y61 Patrol: Takata airbag recall #3

In June 2015, a recall was issued for Nissan GU/Y61 Patrol vehicles that were manufactured between January 2004 and March 2007. The recalled Nissan GU/Y61 Patrol vehicles had VINs in the range JN1***Y61A0346221 to JN1***Y61A0396157 (PRA 2015/16752).

2007-08 Nissan GU/Y61 Patrol: Takata airbag recall #4

In July 2015, Nissan extended its recall of GU/Y61 Patrol cab chassis vehicles with front passenger airbags for the same defect as described in the recall above. Although the recall notice did not provide the dates of manufacture or VINs of these additional vehicles, it is understood that the recalled vehicles were manufactured from April 2007 to December 2008 (PRA 2015/16821).

Nissan GU/Y61 Patrol: Takata airbag recall #5

In December 2016, a recall was issued for Nissan Y61 Patrol vehicles that had passenger airbags. For these vehicles, propellant wafers within the passenger airbag inflator could absorb moisture over time. On deployment, the airbag may deploy too aggressively, damaging the airbag inflator housing and causing metal fragments to be scattered throughout the cabin – this posed a risk of injury for vehicle occupants. The recalled Nissan Y61 Patrol vehicles had VINs in the range JN1***Y61A0001716 to JN1***Y61A0681762 (PRA 2016/15769).

2001 Nissan GU/Y61 Patrol: Takata airbag recall #6

In February 2017, a recall was issued for a single Nissan Y61 Patrol vehicle. In this vehicle, moisture could enter the inflator of the airbag, causing the propellant wafers to deteriorate. Deployment of the airbag could therefore be too aggressive, causing the airbag inflator housing to fracture and metal fragments to be scattered throughout the cabin – these fragments posed a serious risk of injury to vehicle occupants. The VIN of the recalled Nissan Patrol vehicle was JN1TFSY61A0330012 (PRA 2017/15940).

2013-16 Nissan GU/Y61 Patrol: Takata airbag recall #7

In October 2018, recall campaign R1804 was issued for Nissan Y61 Patrol vehicles that were manufactured from 2013 to 2016. In these vehicles, the front passenger airbag contained propellant wafers that could absorb moisture over time. In the event of airbag deployment, excessive internal pressure could cause the metal inflator housing to rupture or explode such that metallic fragments would be projected through the airbag and into the vehicle’s cabin. These metallic fragments posed a risk of serious injury and fatality. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2018/17086.

2001-08 Nissan Y61 Patrol: Takata airbag recall (‘like for like’ replacement)

In November 2018, recall campaign R1803 was issued for 2001-08 production year Nissan Y61 Patrol vehicles. This recall was issued for vehicles that had already had their Takata passenger airbag inflator replaced with a Takata airbag inflator of the same type (i.e. ‘like for like’ replacement) under a previous recall. For this recall, however, the airbag inflator was to be replaced with one that did not have the same defect as the original and its ‘like for like’ replacement whereby the airbag inflator propellant could degrade over time such that excessive pressure on deployment could cause the metal inflator housing to rupture and project metal fragments into the cabin. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2018/17163.
