Review: Audi C6.I A6 Allroad quattro (2007-09)

Overview

Released in April 2007, the Audi C6 Series I (C6.I) A6 Allroad quattro was a four-wheel drive wagon. Manufactured in Neckarsulm, Germany, the A6 Allroad quattro was powered by a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 engine that was mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and drove all four wheels via Audi’s quattro system.

The 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 engine had common-rail diesel direct injection, double overhead camshafts per cylinder bank, four valves per cylinder, a variable geometry Borg Warner turbocharger, two parallel side-mounted intercoolers, a diesel particulate filter and a compression ratio of 17.0:1.

Suspension

The Audi A6 Allroad quattro had four-link front suspension with unequal length wishbones and trapezoidal link rear suspension. The A6 Allroad quattro also featured variable air suspension with an integrated self-levelling function. The air suspension system had five driving modes which could be engaged automatically – depending on road speed – or manually via the Multi Media Interface (MMI). As such, the suspension could be raised by up to 60 mm from its resting position (185 mm) for greater ground clearance (up to 245 mm).

quattro

The Audi C6 A6 Allroad’s ‘quattro’ four-wheel drive quattro system utilised a Torsen centre differential. In normal conditions, the system provided a default front:rear torque split of 50:50, but up to 75 per cent of the engine’s torque could be directed to either axle. The system also included open front and rear differentials with electronic differential locks which could brake individual wheels to enable cross-axle torque transfers at speeds of up 80 km/h.

Safety equipment

Standard safety equipment for the Audi C6 Allroad quattro included dual front airbags, front and rear side airbags, full-length curtain airbags (i.e. for front and rear occupants), ABS, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control, active front seat head restraints and front seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters.
