Review: Chrysler NS Voyager (1997-01)

Overview

Released in February 1997, the Chrysler NS Voyager was a seven-seat people mover. Manufactured in Missouri, USA, the front-wheel drive Voyager was powered by a 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine that was mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The 3.3-litre pushrod V6 petrol engine had a cast iron block, aluminium cylinder heads, two valves per cylinder and a compression ratio of 8.9:1.

The NS Voyager was sold alongside Chrysler’s NS Grand Voyager . Compared to the Grand Voyager, the NS Voyager was 337 mm shorter (at 4733 mm), the same width (1950 mm), 49 mm lower (1740 mm) and had a 152 mm shorter wheelbase (2878 mm). The NS Voyager had sliding doors on both sides and removable ‘Easy Out Roller Seats’.

The Voyager had MacPherson strut front suspension and leaf spring rear suspension.

Safety equipment

Standard safety equipment included dual front airbags and ABS.

Euro NCAP crash testing

In Euro NCAP crash testing , a left-hand drive Voyager with a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine was awarded a two star adult occupant protection rating with a score of 14 points. In the frontal offset test, the Voyager performed so badly that it was not awarded any points – the body structure became unstable and the steering column was driven back into the driver’s chest and head.

Features

Standard features included a four speaker sound system with a radio and cassette player, air conditioning, cruise control, remote central locking, power windows and mirrors, a tilt adjustable steering wheel and an immobiliser.
