Overview
Released in October 1998, the Ferrari 456M was a grand tourer with two-plus-two seating. Manufactured in Maranello, Italy, the rear-wheel drive 456M was powered by a 5.5-litre V12 petrol engine that was mated to either six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission (the GT and GTA variants, respectively).
Like the Ferrari 456 , the 5.5-litre V12 petrol engine for 456M – ‘M’ for Modificata– had double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, dry sump lubrication and a compression ratio of 10.6:1. For the 456M, however, changes included a new Bosch Motronic 5.2 engine management system and changes to the firing pattern of the V12 engine for smoother running.
Compared to its 456 predecessor, the 456M was 33 mm longer (at 4763 mm), though width (1920 mm), height (1300 mm) and wheelbase length (2600 mm) were unchanged. Visually, the 456M could be identified by its larger grille and its new bonnet which omitted the 456’s air scoops; the rear spoiler was also fixed in position. Inside, there were new seats and the Becker sound system was fitted in front of the gear lever.
The 456M had independent front suspension with unequal length wishbones and self-levelling, independent rear suspension (also with unequal length wishbones).
