Overview

Released in Australia in August 1987, the Maserati 425i was a rear-wheel drive, luxury sedan. Manufactured in Modena, Italy, the 425i was powered by a 2.5-litre V6 petrol engine with three valves per cylinder, twin overhead camshafts, Weber electronic injection, two IHI turbochargers and air-to-air intercoolers. The 425i was fitted with a five-speed manual transmission as standard, though a three-speed automatic transmission could also be ordered. The 425i was replaced in 1989 by the 430 .

Although based on Maserati’s Biturbo range, the 425i had a sedan body and a longer wheelbase. As such, the 425i was 4400 mm long, 1730 mm wide, 1360 mm tall and had a 2600 mm long wheelbase (compared to 2514 mm for the Biturbo).

The 425i’s front suspension consisted of MacPherson struts with hydraulic shock absorbers, coil springs and an anti-roll bar; at the rear, the 425i had semi-trailing arms with hydraulic coil springs and coil springs. The 425i was also fitted with a Sensitork limited slip rear differential which could transfer up to 90 per cent of power to the rear wheel with better traction.
