Review: Suzuki HT.I Ignis (2000-03)

Overview

Released in October 2000, the Suzuki HT Series I (HT.I) Ignis was available as a three- or five-door hatchback (the GA and GL variants, respectively). Manufactured in Shizuoka, Japan, the front-wheel drive Ignis was powered by a 1.3-litre petrol four-cylinder engine that was mated to either a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission.

The Ignis was 3615 mm long, 1595 mm wide and had a 2360 mm long wheelbase; while three door models were 1540 mm high, five door models had a 45 mm higher roofline (1585 mm). Furthermore, the Ignis had MacPherson strut front suspension and independent, three-link rear suspension.

Review: Suzuki HT.II Ignis (2003-05)

Overview

Released in September 2003, the HT Series II (HT.II) Ignis introduced a revised line-up, improved equipment levels and a Sport variant. The three-door GA and five-door GL continued, but the range was expanded with a three-door Sport, powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Visually, the HT.II Ignis could be identified by its new front grille, wheel caps, steering wheel and seat fabrics.

Safety equipment

Compared to their HT.I predecessors, standard safety equipment for the HT.II Ignis GL was extended to include ABS, while the Sport variant was further equipped with electronic brake force distribution.

Features: Ignis Sport

Standard features for the Ignis GA and GL were largely unchanged. Compared to the GL, however, the Sport was distinguished by its 15-inch ‘Colgate’ alloy wheels with 185/55 Yokohama Advan A-043 tyres and sports suspension, a four speaker sound system with an MP3-compatible CD player, Recaro front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift, mock carbon-fibre interior highlights and roof-mounted spoiler. The Sport was also fitted with a brace under the engine (for greater rigidity) and bigger brakes.
