Released in November 1997, the Lexus XF20 Series II (XF20.II) LS 400 introduced a more powerful V8 engine with variable intake valve timing, an increased compression ratio (10.5:1), a new acoustic-control induction system and an electronic throttle control. Other changes included a five-speed automatic transmission with a gate-type shift, revised steering and, for the suspension, stiffer springs and dampers for improved handling. The Lexus XF20.II LS 400 could be identified by its new panels forward of the firewall, front grille, self-levelling high intensity discharge (HID) headlights, door mirrors, tail-lights and five-spoke alloy wheels. Inside, there was additional woodgrain trim for the centre console, a gunmetal grey fascia for the audio system, reading lights and micron filtration for the climate control air conditioning.
