Released in April 2011, the Great Wall H5 X240 was a four-wheel drive SUV. Manufactured in Baoding, China, the X240 was powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that was mated to a five-speed manual dual-range transmission. The Mitsubishi-sourced 2.4-litre 4G64 petrol engine had a single overhead camshaft, four valves per cylinder and a compression ratio of 9.8:1.

Compared to the H3 X240 , the H5 was 29 mm longer (at 4649 mm), 10 mm wider (1810 mm) and 75 mm lower (1735 mm), though wheelbase length was unchanged (2700 mm). Visually, the H5 X240 could be identified by its revised front bumper, grille and more angular headlights.

Sold in other markets as the Haval H5, the X240 had independent double wishbone front suspension with hydraulic shock absorbers and a torsion bar. At the rear, the X240 had dependent suspension with hydraulic shock absorbers.

Overview

Released in November 2011, the Great Wall X200 was a five-seat, four-wheel drive SUV. Manufactured in Baoding, China, the X200 was powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine that was initially available with a six-speed manual transmission. From April 2012, however, the X200 was offered with a five-speed automatic transmission.

The 2.0-litre GW4D20 diesel engine had common-rail injection, a variable geometry turbocharger, exhaust gas recirculation and a compression ratio of 16.7:1. Over the ADR 81/02 combined cycle, the X200 achieved fuel consumption of 7.6 L/100km.

Like the petrol-engined Great Wall H5 X240 , the H5 X200 was 4649 mm long, 1810 mm wide, 1735 mm tall and had a 2700 mm long wheelbase. Sold in other markets as the Haval H5, the X200 had independent double wishbone front suspension with hydraulic shock absorbers and a torsion bar. At the rear, the X200 had dependent suspension with hydraulic shock absorbers.

In the offset crash test, the passenger compartment lost structural integrity with protection of the driver’s chest, legs and feet rated as marginal; protection of the lower right leg was also rated as poor.

  • In May 2011, a recall was issued for Great Wall H3 X240 vehicles due to a condition in which the lower section of the steering column may come into contact with the front-right hydraulic brake pipe due to a small clearance. This rubbing could result in a leak in the hydraulic brake pipe and a loss of braking. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2011/12608.
  • In August 2012, a recall was issued for Great Wall H3 X240 vehicles due to gaskets containing a small amount of bonded asbestos fibre. The gaskets were to remain in the vehicle until normal in-service replacement was necessary, although customers could request that the affected gaskets be replaced.       ‘There is no asbestos-related health risk to the driver or any passengers who use the vehicle. The gaskets are tightly embedded in the vehicle and present no hazard during normal operation of the vehicle.’
