Other features of the 4.0-litre M177 and M178 V8 engines include two turbochargers positioned between the cylinder banks which provide maximum boost pressure of 1.2 bar (17.4 psi), direct petrol injection with piezo injectors (maximum fuel pressure of 200 bar), cylinder bore liners with ‘Nanoslide’ technology, double overhead camshafts (chain-driven), variable inlet and exhaust valve timing, four valves per cylinder actuated by roller finger followers, a compression ratio of 10.5:1 and maximum engine speed of 7000 rpm. The M177 and M178 engines will both have an ECO start/stop function and comply with Euro 6 emissions standards.
While the M178 engine will have dry sump lubrication, the M177 engine will have a conventional oil sump and lubrication system.
The M177 and M178 replaced Mercedes-Benz’s biturbo 5.5-litre M157 engine.
