Review: Peugeot Phase I 607 (2001-05)

Overview

Released in October 2001, the Peugeot Phase I 607 was a large, front-wheel drive sedan. Manufactured in France, the 607 was powered by Peugeot’s ES9 aluminium V6 engine which had double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing for the intake camshafts and a compression ratio of 10.5. For the Phase I 607, a four-speed automatic transmission was fitted as standard.

Dimensions

Compared to the Peugeot 605 predecessor with which its chassis was shared, the 607 was 150 mm longer (at 4871 mm), 36 mm wider (1835 mm) and 34 mm taller (1460 mm); wheelbase length, however, was unchanged at 2800 mm.

Suspension

The 607 had double wishbone suspension front and rear.

Peugeot Phase I 607 specifications
Engine Trans. Peak power Peak torque
607 2.9-litre petrol V6 (Z8) 4sp auto 152 kW at 6000 rpm 285 Nm at 3750 rpm

Safety equipment

Standard safety equipment for the Phase I 607 included dual front airbags, front side airbags, full-length curtain airbags (i.e. for front and rear occupants), ABS, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, electronic stability control, traction control, front seatbelt pretensioners and load-limiting seatbelts for all occupants.

In October 2003, safety equipment was enhanced with the addition of rear side airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners and load limiting seatbelts for all five seats.

Euro NCAP crash testing

In Euro NCAP crash testing , a 2002 607 with a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine received a four star adult occupant protection rating with a score of 26. In the frontal offset test, impact forces caused the sill to buckle and the door pillar to rotate outwards such that the door could not be opened by hand. The driver also experienced high chest forces in both the frontal offset and side impact test.

Features

Standard features for the Phase I 607 included 17-inch alloy wheels, a ten speaker sound system with a six-stack CD player, dual zone climate control air conditioning, leather seats, cruise control, remote central locking, tilt and reach adjustable steering wheel, power adjustable front seats with memory settings for the driver’s seat, front fog lamps, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, power adjustable and folding exterior mirrors, power windows, a trip computer and an immobiliser.

In October 2003, standard features were extended to include an upgraded twelve speaker sound system, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity, rear parking sensors, rear fog lamps, a rear blind and remote-operated boot.

Recalls: Peugeot 607

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: Peugeot 607

  • In July 2004, a recall was issued for Peugeot 607vehicles manufactured from July 2001 to October 2002 and in the VIN range VF39DXFXE92009305 to VF39DXFXE92083151. For these vehicles, the negative battery cable could rub on the air conditioning piping, potentially causing a short circuit in the electrical system (PRA 2004/7107).
  • In April 2005, a recall was issued for Peugeot 607 vehicles manufactured from September 2003 to June 2004 and in the VIN range VF39DXFXF92098532 to VF39DXFXF92111315. For these vehicles, the anti-theft wheel locking bolt kit needed to be replaced to eliminate the risk of damage to the bolts, making it more difficult to remove the wheel using the anti-theft key (PRA 2005/7628).
