Review: Daewoo Cielo (1995-97)

Overview

Released in October 1995, the Daewoo Cielo was available as a three- or five-door hatchback or as a four-door sedan. Manufactured in Bupyeong, South Korea, the front-wheel drive Cielo was powered by 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engines. However, whereas GL variants were powered by 1.5-litre engines which had a single overhead camshaft and two valves per cylinder, the 1.5-litre engines of GLX variants had double overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. The full Cielo range is given in the table below.

Replacing the Daewoo 1.5i , the three- and five-door Cielo hatchbacks were 4256 mm long, 1662 mm wide, 1393 mm tall and had 2520 mm long wheelbases; the sedans, however, were 226 mm longer (at 4482 mm), though the other dimensions were unchanged. Furthermore, the Cielo had MacPherson strut front suspension and torsion beam rear suspension.

The Cielo was also sold as the Nexia (as pictured above) in international markets.

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: Daewoo Cielo

  • In January 1998, a recall was issued for Daewoo Cielo GL variants vehicles manufactured prior to 12 December 1995 and in the VIN range SB588045 to TB681783. For these vehicles, the fuel damper may come into contact with a brake line (near the brake master cylinder), resulting in damage to the brake line to the extent that fluid can escape (PRA 1998/3434).
