2004-05 4WD

Safety equipment

Safety equipment for the RS.II Grand Voyager was improved with the introduction of full-length curtain airbags (i.e. for all three rows of seats) across the range.

Euro NCAP crash testing

In Euro NCAP crash testing , a right-hand drive RS.II Grand Voyager with a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine was awarded a two star rating with a score of 16.49. Although the Voyager scored enough points overall for a three star rating, its performance in the frontal impact did not meet the minimum level for that rating such that the car was awarded a two star rating with the second star struck through. Furthermore, the curtain airbag did not deploy as intended during the pole test, becoming trapped between the dummy’s head and the B-pillar.

Features

Features were substantially the same as for the RS.I Grand Voyager, although a six-stack CD player was now standard across the range.

February 2005: Grand Voyager update

In February 2005, an optional ‘Stow and Go’ seating arrangement was introduced, enabling the second and third-row seats to be folded into under-floor cavities for increased luggage space.

2005 Voyager Vision editions

In September 2005, limited-run Vision editions were released for each variant within the range. For the SE and LX variants, the Vision editions were equipped with an Infinity sound system (already fitted to the LX), six-stack DVD player, power adjustable driver’s seat, rear parking sensors and overhead rail storage system; the Limited Vision edition also gained a 10-inch display.

2007 Voyager LX Signature Series

In 2007, limited-run Signature Series editions were released of the LX variant; these models were distinguished by their leather seats, overhead rail storage system and rear seat DVD entertainment system.

Chrysler RS Grand Voyager: difficulty re-fuelling

In September 2009, Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 14-001-09 REV A was issued for 2003-07 Chrysler RS Grand Voyager vehicles with petrol engines. For these vehicles, the owner may experience difficulties when re-fuelling or the fuel pump nozzle may shut off repeatedly during re-fuelling. For these vehicles, the TSB described a diagnosis procedure which may identify the source of the problem as:

  • The fuel filler tube;
  • The vapour recirculation tube;
  • The fuel tank itself;
  • A blockage in the EVAP canister, ESIM, clean air hose or filter; or,
  • The control valve to the EVAP canister tube.

Chrysler RS Grand Voyager: brake pipes may deform during steering rack replacement

In 2008, Chrysler UK issued a ‘non-code action’ for Chrysler Grand Voyager vehicles because the brake pipes could deform during a steering rack replacement. For affected Chrysler Voyager vehicles, the brake pipes were to be inspected (NCA/2008/005).

2007 Chrysler RS Grand Voyager: front door latches may corrode

In 2013, Chrysler UK issued a ‘non-code action’ for Chrysler Grand Voyager vehicles that were manufactured from 1 August 2007 to 31 October 2007. For these Chrysler Grand Voyager vehicles, the front door latches could corrode – this could result in not being able to open the doors, including when people were in the cabin. For affected vehicles, both front door latches were to be replaced (NCA/2013/010).

Chrysler RS Grand Voyager: Problems and faults

  • The engine may lose power or stall, especially at lower temperatures, requiring the throttle-position sensor to be replaced.
  • A tapping noise from the engine on start-up requires updated exhaust valve swivel pads.
  • The fuel gauge may give inconsistent readings but return to the correct level after about 10 minutes of driving due to a kinked hose at the leak detection pump filter.
  • Knocking (or squawking) noises from the front suspension may be corrected by replacing the sway-bar links.
  • The front passenger side carpet may be damp due to condensation from the air conditioning drain tube blowing back into the passenger compartment. Replacing the tube with a longer one or fitting O-ring at the drain outlet may fix the problem.
  • The air conditioning compressor may fail, causing a squealing or missing drive belt. Once the air conditioning parts are replaced, the body-control computer needs to be re-programmed.
  • Power steering additives containing Teflon could clog the filter in the fluid reservoir and should therefore be avoided.
  • On vehicles equipped with rear HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) controls, the air conditioning and heater tubes bracket under the vehicle could corrode, enabling the tubes to leak coolant or refrigerant.
  • Steering shudder at low speeds may require a fluid cooler and possibly a longer power steering hose. If the steering makes moaning or honking noises at low speeds, it may require the installation of a fluid cooler and possibly a steering gear.
  • For some early models, a serpentine belt may squeal or jumps off its pulley because of water leaking from the wiper-module drain tube – this was more common in extremely cold temperatures where ice could form on the pulley.
  • For some early models, debris from the road could hit and damage the air conditioning condenser and cause a leak; later models were fitted with a deflector.
  • Where fitted, the power sliding sunroof may recognised a loose weather strip as an obstruction that causes it to malfunction when opening or closing; the weather strip should be replaced.

Recalls & faults: Chrysler RT Grand Voyager (2008-15) https://www.australiancar.reviews/recalls-faults-chrysler-rt-grand-voyager-2008-15/ Sun, 27 Dec 2020 23:17:02 +0000 http://prod.australiancar.reviews/recalls-faults-chrysler-rt-grand-voyager-2008-15/

Recalls: Chrysler RT Grand Voyager

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: Chrysler RT Grand Voyager

2008-09 Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: sliding door wiring harness

In October 2010, a recall was issued for 2008 to 2009 year Chrysler RT Grand Voyager vehicles. In these vehicles, the right and/or left power sliding door wiring harness may chafe on the sliding door hinge when operating – this could cause the sliding door latch to overheat and malfunction (PRA 2010/12928).

2010 model year Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: engine may shut down unexpectedly

In July 2011, a recall was issued for 2010 model year Chrysler Grand Voyager vehicles. For these vehicles, if the FOBIK (keyless entry unit) was not fully seated in the ‘ON’ position, it could inadvertently move to the ‘accessory’ mode. Under certain driving conditions such as bumpy roads, this defect could cause an unintended engine shut off and pose a hazard to the driver and other road users (PRA 2011/12924). In June 2015, this recall was superseded by PRA 2015/14740, described below.

2011 model year Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: non-compliant brake pads

In November 2011, a recall was issued for 2011 model year Chrysler RT Grand Voyager vehicles due to the potential fitting of non-compliant brake pads. As a result, the brakes pads may be less efficacious and increase the risk of an accident (PRA 2011/12923).

2008 Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) module

In March 2012, a recall was issued for 2008 Chrysler Grand Voyager models due to the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORS) module potentially becoming contaminated by water leaking from the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) drain grommet – this could cause the airbag warning light to illuminate and/or inadvertent airbag deployment (PRA 2012/13045).

2012 Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: liftgate pinch sensor

In May 2012, a recall was issued for three (3) Grand Voyagers that were available for sale in March 2012. In these vehicles, the right side power liftgate pinch sensor may not function as intended, resulting in greater force being required to stop the power liftgate during the final closing stages. Failure of the power liftgate could cause injury if persons were to place their hands in the liftgate opening. The recalled vehicles had the following VINs: 2C4RC1F57CR273809, 2C4RC1F55CR273825 and 2C4RC1F57CR287726 (PRA 2012/13139).

Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: curtain airbags may not deploy

In August 2013, a recall was issued for one-hundred and sixty-four (164) Chrysler RT Grand Voyager vehicles. In these vehicles, a software error in the Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) module could prevent the side curtain airbags from deploying, thereby increasing the risk of injury to occupants (PRA 2013/13705).

2013-14 Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: weight certification label

In October 2014, a recall was issued for RT Grand Voyager vehicles that were manufactured from 21 August 2013 to 26 June 2014. In these vehicles, the weight certification label had the incorrect value for Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings (GVWR). Without understanding the correct GVWR specification, the owner may overload the vehicle and compromise the vehicle’s handling. To implement the recall, Chrysler would notify owners to take their vehicle to a dealership and have the weight certification label replaced (PRA 2014/14395).

2008-10 Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: engine may shut down unexpectedly

In June 2015, a recall was issued for 2008 to 2010 Chrysler RT Grand Voyager vehicles. In these vehicles, the Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) module may have unintentional movement of the Frequency Operated Button Ignition Key (FOBIK) from the ‘On’ to the ‘Accessory’ position while driving – this could cause the engine to shut down unexpectedly, posing an accident hazard to the driver and other road users (PRA 2015/14740). Please note that this recall superseded the recall which was issued in July 2011 and described above (PRA 2011/12924).

2008-09 Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) module

In March 2016, a recall was issued for 2008-09 Chrysler Grand Voyager vehicles because the Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) module may malfunction due to corrosion of the power supply integrated circuit. If this occurred, the airbag warning lamp may illuminate and the airbag may not deploy in a collision, or the airbag may deploy inadvertently – both of these conditions increased the risk of injury to the front occupants of the vehicle (PRA 2016/15237).

2008-10 model year Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: driver airbag emblem

In October 2020, recall campaign W09 was issued for 2008-10 model year Chrysler RT Grand Voyager vehicles. These vehicles may have a loose or detached driver airbag emblem, and/or loose emblem retainers within the driver airbag module assembly. In the event of airbag deployment, a loose or detached emblem could become a projectile that is propelled towards vehicle occupants and causes serious injury. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18487.

Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: Problems and faults

  • Disconnecting or reconnecting the battery without first removing the radio fuse could cause damage to the MyGig audio system due to voltage spikes.
  • A clunking noise from the rear when going over bumps or when turning may be due to the exhaust resonator hitting the vehicle – this can be fixed by installing updated exhaust hangers.
  • The power adjustable third row of seats may begin to move from its stowed position, stop before the seatback is upright and then cease working – this was usually due to an object interfering with the position sensors.
  • For early models, the MyGIG audio system could cease working properly; this was rectified with a software update.
  • When the rear lift-gate is closed, the switch wires may short-circuit; – this may cause audible warnings to be heard and the ‘liftgate ajar’ light to illuminate.

Recalls: Chrysler NS Grand Voyager

  • In August 2001, a recall was issued for model year 1997 to 2000 Chrysler NS Grand Voyager vehicles manufactured up to 23 August 2000. For these vehicles, the handbrake cable was too long and may exceed the mechanism’s ability to lock in position properly; this could result in the vehicle rolling away unless the transmission was in park (PRA 2001/4910). This recall superseded a similar recall which was issued in February 2000 (PRA 2000/4228).
  • In May 2002, a recall was issued for Chrysler NS Grand Voyager vehicles which may have been fitted with a particular type of front brake pad. For these vehicles, the brake pad friction blocks may separate from its backing plate, thereby compromising overall braking efficiency (PRA 2002/5403).
  • In October 2002, a recall was issued for model year 1996 to 2000 Chrysler NS Grand Voyager vehicles with engines built up to 26 August 1999 (102389). In these vehicles, the fuel rail crossover tube O-ring seals may leak after extended use, causing a fire in the engine bay (PRA 2002/5760).

Problems and faults: Chrysler NS Grand Voyager

  • The Chrysler Voyager’s 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine may lose power and/or misfire; this problem may be resolved by disconnecting the knock sensor. Rough running may be due to broken pedestals in the cylinder heads.
  • Engine overheating may be corrected by reprogramming the powertrain control module.
  • The radiator fan may run after the engine is turned off, or may not run and lead to overheating because the fan relay attaching screws break and the relay overheats.
