Overview

Released in Australia in January 2017, the Suzuki Ignis is a light, five-door hatchback. Manufactured in Sagara, Japan, the front-wheel drive Suzuki Ignis is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine that is mated to either a five-speed manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT). Furthermore, the Suzuki Ignis range consists of five-seat GL variants and four-seat GLX variants.

Suzuki Ignis: K12C engine

The MF Ignis is powered by Suzuki’s 1242 cc K12C ‘DualJet’ engine which is understood to have an aluminium alloy block and cylinder head, dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, both port injection and direct injection (Suzuki’s ‘Dual Jet’), and a compression ratio of 12.5:1.

GLX (four seats) CVT

Body and dimensions

The Suzuki Ignis is 3700 mm long, 1660 mm wide, 1595 mm tall and has a 2435 mm long wheelbase. While four seat versions of the Suzuki Ignis have separate rear seats that can slide forward, five seat versions have a fixed rear bench seat. Furthermore, the Ignis has a luggage capacity of 267 litres which increases to 1100 litres when the rear seats are folded.

For Australia, the Suzuki Ignis GL with manual transmission has an unladen weight of 830 kg.

Suspension and steering

The Suzuki Ignis has MacPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam rear axle, both with coil springs. Furthermore, the Ignis has rack-and-pinion steering with electric power assistance; its turning circle is 9.4 metres.

Safety equipment

Standard safety equipment for the Suzuki Ignis includes dual front airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, full-length curtain airbags, ABS, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control and front seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters.

Brakes

The Suzuki Ignis has 231 mm by 17 mm ventilated front brake discs and 180 mm by 34 mm rear drum brakes.

Euro NCAP testing

Euro NCAP conducted testing on the Suzuki Ignis in its standard and ‘Safety Pack’-equipped forms. The standard Suzuki Ignis received a three star safety rating which included 79 per cent adult occupant and child occupant protection ratings. In the offset test, protection of the driver’s head, thighs and feet were rated as good, but chest protection was rated as weak and lower leg protection as marginal. While maximum points were awarded in the side impact test, chest protection was rated as adequate in the more severe pole test.

For Europe, the Safety Pack included a dual camera brake support system that provided autonomous emergency braking (AEB). With the Safety Pack, the adult occupant protection rating increased to 87 per cent (due to a three point bonus for the AEB system), the Pedestrian safety rating increased to 77 per cent (from 67 per cent) and the Safety Assist rating increased to 60 per cent (from 25 per cent). As a result, the Suzuki Ignis with Safety Pack received a five star safety rating.

Review: Suzuki HT.II Ignis (2003-05)

Released in September 2003, the HT Series II (HT.II) Ignis introduced a revised line-up, improved equipment levels and a Sport variant. The three-door GA and five-door GL continued, but the range was expanded with a three-door Sport, powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Visually, the HT.II Ignis could be identified by its new front grille, wheel caps, steering wheel and seat fabrics.

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

2016-18 Suzuki Ignis: ISOFIX child restraint information

In November 2019, recall campaign SSR20 was issued for Suzuki Ignis vehicles that were available for sale in Australia from 30 March 2016 to 1 June 2018. These vehicles were supplied with incorrect information in the Owner Manual in regards to the installation of ISOFIX child restraints. Owners may incorrectly install the ISOFIX child restraint system and this posed a risk of injury to the child in the event of a collision. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2019/17948 (QLD) and/or PRA 2019/17945 (national).

Suzuki MF Ignis: rear suspension bottoms out

For the Suzuki MF Ignis, there have been reports of the rear shock absorbers bottoming out (i.e. fully compressing) when the vehicle is laden and driven over bumps – this adversely affects ride quality and handling.

For Suzuki Ignis Allgrip (all-wheel drive models), it is understood that stiffer front and rear shock absorbers and different bump stops were introduced into production in late 2017. For UK-delivered vehicles, these upgrades could be retrofitted for older models. For front wheel drive models, however, no change appears to have been made.

Recalls: Suzuki HT Ignis

  • In August 2005, a recall was issued for Suzuki HT Ignis Sport variants due to the left front driveshaft potentially detaching from the transmission during certain high speed driving conditions; this would result in a loss of driving force to the wheels (PRA 2005/7975).
  • In December 2006, a recall was issued for Suzuki HT Ignis models manufactured from March 2003 to October 2004. For these vehicles, improper folding of the front passenger airbag may have created a gap between the internal folded airbag and bag holder (PRA 2006/8952).
  • In April 2015, a recall was issued for Suzuki Ignis vehicles because contact grease used for lubrication within the vehicle ignition switch may carbonise with frequent usage; carbonisation of the grease may produce smoke from the ignition switch and pose a potential fire hazard (PRA 2015/14661).
