Review: Ford ST Probe (1994-95)

Overview

Released in June 1994, the Ford ST Probe was a two-door coupe with a rear liftback. Manufactured at Ford’s Flat Rock plant in Michigan, USA, the Probe was powered by a 2.5-litre V6 petrol engine that was mated to either a four-speed F-4EAT automatic or five-speed G5M manual transmission. The Mazda-sourced KL-DE V6 engine had double overhead cams (per cylinder bank), four valves per cylinder and a compression ratio of 9.2:1.

Based on the Mazda GE platform that was shared with the MX-6 and 626, the Probe had MacPherson strut front suspension and independent rear suspension with one trailing link and two lateral links. Furthermore, the Probe was 4570 mm long, 1780 mm wide, 1310 mm tall and had a 2610 mm long wheelbase.

Standard features for the Ford Probe included 16-inch alloy wheels, a five speaker sound system with a radio and cassette player, air conditioning, power adjustable driver’s seat, cruise control, front fog lights, leather-wrapped steering wheel, folding rear seats, central locking, power windows and mirrors, adjustable steering column, illuminated vanity mirrors and an alarm.

Review: Ford SU Probe (1996)

Overview

Released in March 1996, the SU Probe added a rear spoiler along with minor trim changes. Standard safety equipment and features, however, were largely unchanged.

Review: Ford SV Probe (1997-98)

Overview

Released in February 1997, changes for the SV Probe were limited to the introduction of swirl-style alloy wheels.

Problems and faults: Ford Probe

  • For models with automatic transmissions, transmission fluid may leak from the vent hole of automatic transmission yet appear to be from the cooler lines or main control cover.
  • If the engine stalls when the transmission is shifted into drive, mass airflow snorkel tube may be cracked.
  • A bent fuel return line may interfere with the sending unit and cause the fuel gauge to read three-quarters full when the tank is full.
