Recalls: Audi FY Q5
Overview
Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.
Recalls: Audi FY Q5
2017 Audi FY Q5 with HUD: airbag may not deploy as intended
In May 2018, a recall was issued for Audi FY Q5 vehicles that were fitted with the optional head-up display and manufactured in June or July 2017. In these vehicles, a defective weld joint that connected the central tube for the dashboard panel to the chute that helped the airbag inflate correctly could cause the chute to be distorted. A distorted chute could damage the airbag during deployment, potentially reducing the airbag’s protective capabilities and increasing the risk of injury (PRA 2018/16777).
2018 Audi FY Q5: increased stopping distances
In June 2018, a recall (campaign number 47N6) was issued for Audi FY Q5 vehicles that were manufactured from March 2018 to May 2018. In these vehicles, the rear brake pistons may have been coated incorrectly and this could cause increased brake pedal travel and increased stopping distances, thereby increasing the risk of a collision. For the VINs of the recalled Audi FY Q5 vehicles, please see PRA 2018/16853.
2018-19 Audi FY Q5: brake master cylinder defect and potential loss of power braking
In April 2019, recall campaign 47O9 was issued for Audi FY Q5 vehicles that were manufactured between July 2018 and March 2019. Wall thickness of the brake master cylinder in these vehicles may not meet specifications, such that it may develop a leak and fail. If this occurred, the hydraulic brake system would fail and this increased the risk of a collision. The electronic parking brake and its emergency braking function, however, would remain functional. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2019/17525.
2017-19 model year Audi FY Q5: wheel arch covers could detach
In August 2019, recall campaign 66K7 was issued for 2017-19 model year Audi FY Q5 vehicles. For some of these vehicles, the wheel arch covers may have been incorrectly fastened and could loosen over time. If this occurred, the wheel arch covers could detach from the vehicle while it was being driven – this posed a hazard to road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2019/17754.
2015-19 model year Audi FY Q5: wheel arch covers could detach
In September 2019, recall campaign 66K6 was issued for 2015-19 model year Audi FY Q5 vehicles. These vehicles may have had incorrectly fasted wheel arch covers that could come loose over time and detach from the vehicle – this could pose a collision risk to road users. To fix, the four wheel arch covers were to be secured with an additional retainer and bolt. For the VINSs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2019/17771.
2016-19 Audi FY Q5: wheel arch covers could detach
In November 2019, recall campaign 66K8 was issued for Audi FY Q5 vehicles that were manufactured between 2016 and 2019. Over time, incorrectly fastened wheel arch covers could come loose and potentially detach from affected vehicles. If the wheel arch covers loosened, they could detach from the vehicle and pose a hazard to other road users. To fix, the securing clips on both rear wheel arch covers were to be replaced with improved parts. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2019/17989.
2020 Audi FY Q5: backrest adjuster could break
In November 2020, recall campaign 72L1 was issued for Audi FY Q5 vehicles that were manufactured in June and July 2020. Due to incorrect welding, the gap on the adjusting mechanism for the backrest of the front seats may be faulty. In the event of a rear collision, the backrest adjuster could break and this increased the risk of injury to vehicle occupants. In the event of a serious collision, this could result in the death of a vehicle occupant. For the VINs of the vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18587.
2019-21 Audi FY Q5: rear axle nuts could break and cause loss of control
In September 2021, recall campaign 42L1 was issued for 2019-21 Audi FY Q5 vehicles. Some nuts fitted to the rear axle assembly did not meet manufacturing specifications and could therefore break. A broken nut may lead to increased movement between the wishbone and hub carrier, and a change in the wheel alignment on the rear axle. These conditions could cause sudden and uncontrollable movement of the rear axle, thereby increasing the risk of injury and death to vehicle occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-001665.
2019-21 Audi FY Q5: misalignment of rear axle from previous recall
In March 2022, recall campaign 42L5 was issued for 2019-21 Audi FY Q5 vehicles. The previous replacement of the rear axle clamping nuts as part of recall 42L1 may have caused misalignment of the rear axle assembly; this could result in excessive wear to the rear tyres, and may result in a sudden flat tyre and subsequent loss of vehicle control. These circumstances increased the risk of a collision and injury to vehicle occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005076.
2016-21 Audi FY Q5: electronic control data network management unit could fail
In March 2022, recall campaign 90S9 was issued for 2016-21 Audi FY Q5 vehicles. Due to its installation position, liquid or liquid droplets spilt on the rear bench seat could damage the central electronic control data network management unit and cause it to fail. If this occurred, the engine may enter emergency running mode and operate with reduced performance, the automatic gearbox may interrupt power transmission to the drivetrain and steering assistance may be reduced; other functions may also be affected and warning messages may appear in the instrument cluster. This condition increased the risk of a collision and therefore injury for vehicle occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005077.
