Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Pre-2017 Audi 4S R8: Takata airbag recall

In September 2018, recall campaign 69S8 was issued for Audi 4S R8 vehicles that were available for sale in Australia prior to 31 December 2017. Due to high temperatures and humidity, the airbag inflator propellant in the driver’s airbag could degrade over time. In the event of a collision which triggered the airbag, excessive internal pressure could cause the metal airbag inflator housing to explode or rupture, projecting metal fragments through the airbag cushion towards vehicle occupants – these metal fragments posed a risk of serious injury or fatality. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2018/17035.

2015-17 Audi 4S R8 V10 with DL800 transmission: possible oil leak

In October 2018, recall campaign 34J1 was issued for Audi R8 V10 Coupe and Spyder vehicles that had DL800 transmissions and were manufactured between week 26 of 2015 and week 42 of 2017. When the vehicle was being driven on a racetrack and extreme driving manoeuvres were being performed, these vehicles may experience oil leakage in the gearbox breather. Oil vapour escaping from the gearbox breather could make contact with hot components in the engine compartment. As a result, smoke may be produced and the vehicle could catch fire. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2018/17089.
