Recalls: Bentley Continental GT

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

2018 Bentley Continental GT: loss of power steering

In January 2019, recall campaign RE19/02 (RB16) was issued for 2018 model year Bentley Continental GT vehicles that were available for sale in Australia from 27 June 2018 to 27 November 2018. Due to a software error, the electric power steering control unit may temporarily cease providing power steering assistance and an error may be displayed. If power steering was lost, the drive would need to apply additional steering force and this posed a collision risk to vehicle occupants and other road users. To fix, the electric power steering control unit was to be reprogrammed with new software (SW2110) and this process was to take less than an hour. For the VINs of the recalled Bentley Continental GT vehicles, please see PRA 2019/17291.

2018-19 Bentley Continental GT: loss of centre console functions and illumination

In June 2019, recall campaign RE19/06 (RB20) was issued for Bentley Continental GT vehicles that were available for sale from 27 June 2018 to 13 February 2019. Due to a software fault, the centre console switchpack may suffer a loss of illumination and certain functions in the centre console. If the functions failed, the hazard warning lights and defrost demist functionality of the vehicle would not work, increasing the risk of a collision. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2019/17589.

2018-19 Bentley Continental GT: loss of power steering assistance

In July 2019, recall campaign RE19/07 (RB21) was issued for 2018-19 Bentley Continental GT vehicles that were available for sale in Australia from 14 September 2018 to 25 March 2019. Due to an improper manufacturing process, the electrical power steering wiring harness may become trapped between the sub-frame and sub-frame closing plate. If the harness got trapped, it could short circuit and cause a loss of power steering assistance – this also posed a fire hazard and a warning would be issued to the driver. If this occurred while the vehicle was being driven, it increased the risk of a collision. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2019/17655.

2018-21 Bentley Continental GT: front seat may move rearwards when lowered

In August 2021, recall campaign RE21/26 was issued for 2018-21 Bentley Continental GT vehicles. Due to a software issue, lowering the height of a front seat may also cause it to move rearwards, and this could trap the legs of a rear occupant. In the event of a collision, the risk of injury would be increased if the rear occupant’s legs were trapped. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-001685.

2018-21 Bentley Continental GT: trim could keep accelerator pedal depressed

In July 2021, recall campaign RE21/23 (RC05) was issued for 2018-21 Bentley Continental GT vehicles. Due to inconsistent fitment of the fuse box and the electrical harness, the A-post lower trim could protrude into the vehicle’s cabin, reducing clearance to the accelerator pedal. If the accelerator pedal was fully depressed whilst driving and unable to return to its resting position, the vehicle would continue to accelerate, even when the driver’s foot was removed from the accelerator pedal. This condition increased the risk of losing vehicle control and a collision, also increasing the risk of injury for vehicle occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-001669.

2018-19 Bentley Continental GT: defective water pump

In February 2023, recall campaign RE23/02 was issued for 2018-19 Bentley Continental GT vehicles. Due to a design defect, the water pump could create a vacuum within the electrical area of the pump. This could cause liquid from the coolant system to permeate the housing of the water pump and damage electricaly circuitry, which could cause a vehicle fire. Such a fire posed a risk to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders. In the event that the Engine Mangagement Light (EML) illuminated, or smoke was detected, owners should stop the vehicle where it is safe to do so, turn off the ignition, evacuate the vehicle and contact their nearest Bentley Dealer. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005611.

2019-20 Bentley Contingental GTC: airbag could tear during deployment

In March 2023, recall campaign RE23/03 (RC68) was issued for 2019-20 Bentley Contingental GTC vehicles. Due to a manufacturing defect, the riveting in the airbag deflector bracket may have a sharp edge and could contact the airbag – this could cause a tear in the airbag and reduce its effectiveness. In the event of a collision which triggered the airbag, vehicle occupants would have a higher risk of injury. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005632.
