Recalls: Chrysler PL101 Neon

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: Chrysler PL101 Neon

  • In July 1997, a recall was issued for Chrysler PL101 Neon vehicles due to the airbag control module potentially causing inadvertent deployment of the airbag during a three second period after the ignition was switched off (PRA 1997/3229).
  • In January 2002, a recall was issued for all Chrysler PL101 Neon vehicles built up to 21 March 2001 and fitted with the 2.0-litre petrol engine. For these vehicles, the brake booster vacuum hose may swell if it came into contact with oil and become dislodged from the engine. If this occurred, a loss of braking power assistance and an increase in engine idle speed could result (PRA 2002/5143).
  • In May 2002, a recall was issued for Chrysler PL101 Neon vehicles which may have been fitted with a particular type of front brake pad. For these vehicles, the brake pad friction blocks may separate from its backing plate, thereby compromising overall braking efficiency (PRA 2002/5403).

Problems and faults: Chrysler PL101 Neon

  • A rough idle and misfire for the Neon’s 2.0-litre engine may be attributable to faulty valve springs.
  • If the ABS warning light stays on after the engine is started, the ABS system will be disabled and the ABS controller may require replacement.
  • The front brakes may experience abnormally fast wear on models with four wheel studs, such that heavy-duty linings should be used to replace them.
  • In cold weather, ice may form in the air conditioning motor housing, preventing the motor from moving and blowing the fuse. To fix, the drain tube must be rerouted, the fan/blower replaced and a new fuse installed.
  • Flat batteries may be attributable to 1) the glove box light staying on, 2) misaligned doors, 3) a faulty bootlid switch and lamp assembly, or 4) a missing door-ajar bumper pad.
  • If the power steering fluid is replaced with a product that does not meet specifications, the steering system may produce unusual noises for the first few minutes when started in cold weather.
