Recalls: Ford S550 Mustang
Overview
Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.
Recalls: Ford S550 Mustang
2015-16 Ford S550 Mustang V8: potential engine compartment fire
In March 2017, a recall was issued for Ford Mustang V8 vehicles that were manufactured from 27 May 2015 to 1 March 2016. In these vehicles, there may be insufficient clearance between the battery cable wiring loom and the exhaust manifold. As such, the wiring loom could contact the manifold and cause an electrical short circuit; this could also result in an engine compartment fire (PRA 2017/15966).
2018-20 Ford S550 Mustang: rear-view camera, reverse lamps and driver assist features not working
In June 2022, recall campaign 22S37 was issued for 2018-20 Ford S550 Mustang vehicles. Due to a manufacturing issue, the rear-view camera display, reverse lamps and various driver assist features may not operate as intended. If this occurred, the driver would receive warning signals in the instrument cluster. Nonetheless, this condition increased the risk of a collision and injury to vehicle occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005468.
2014-17 Ford Mustang: defective wiring harness in rear boot lid
In July 2023, recall campaign 22S06 was issued for 2014-17 Ford Mustang vehicles. A manufacturing defect in the wiring harness of the rear boot lid may cause intermittent operation of the rear-view camera, loss of satellite radio receiption, an inoperative luggage compartment lamp and/or an inoperable luggage compartment release. If the rear-view camera display was not continuous when reversing, this condition could increase the risk of collision and injury to vehicle occupants and bystanders. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005725.
2019-23 Ford S550 Mustang: brake fluid level warning light
In December 2023, recall campaign 23C35 was issued for 2019-23 Ford S550 Mustang vehicles. Due to a software issue, the brake fluid warning light may not illuminate as intended to warn the driver if the brake fluid level was low. If there was insufficient brake fluid, braking performance would be reduced and this condition increased the risk of a collision. To fix, a Ford dealer was to update the vehicle’s Body Control Module (BCM) software. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005862.

2015-17 Ford S550 Mustang: driveline vibration
In February 2017, Ford issued a technical service bulletin (Manufacturer Communication Number: SSM 45938) for 2015-17 Ford Mustang vehicles. According to the bulletin, these vehicles may exhibit driveline vibrations when being driven at speeds between 70 km/h and 100 km/h – this vibration may be:
- Felt as a tremor in the floor pan, seat track or steering wheel; and,
- Heard as a rumble, hum or boom.
The bulletin described the following process for dealing with this problem:
- Inspect the driveshaft for damage, undercoating, incorrectly seated universal joints;
- Rotate the driveshaft by hand to feel for any binding or end play in the universal joints;
- If the above are normal, correct any tyre balance problems; and,
- If the driveline vibration was still present, then balance the driveshaft using the MasterTech MTS 4000 Driveline Balance and NVH Analyzer.
Prior to this bulletin being issued it is understood that driveline vibrations were rectified by replacing the driveshaft.
2015-16 Ford Mustang with manual transmission: engine does not crank
In August 2016, Ford issued Technical Service Bulletin 16-0103 for Ford S550 Mustang vehicles that had manual transmissions and were manufactured on or before 15 June 2016. In these vehicles, the engine may not crank (a ‘no crank condition’) due to damage to the clutch pedal position (CPP) switch. If the CPP showed signs of physical damage, a new CPP switch (part number HR3Z-11A152-A) and bracket was to be installed. The replacement switch included a plastic bracket which rotated the connector 90 degrees.
2015-17 Ford Mustang EcoBoost: DTCs P0456, P1450 and/or P144C
In February 2017, Ford issued Technical Service Bulletin 17-0019 for Ford S550 Mustang vehicles that had 2.3-litre turbocharged petrol engines and were built on or before 13 January 2017. In these vehicles, diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0456, P1450 and/or P144C may be stored in the powertrain control module (PCM). If this occurred,
- The evaporative emission canister purge valve (part number FR3Z-9G297-C) was to be replaced; and,
- The PCM was to be reprogrammed to the latest calibration (using IDS release 104.02 or higher).
Ford S550 Mustang: clanking noise from transmission
Ford Mustang owners have reported a clanking noise when putting the car into drive – this required the front transmission flange to be replaced.
Ford S550 Mustang: misaligned panels
AustralianCar.Reviews recommends that owners conduct a thorough inspection when first receiving their Ford Mustang due to reports of:
- Misalignment of the bonnet, front panel, doors and rear quarter panel;
- Doors dropping;
- Inability to synchronise mobile devices and the reversing camera not displaying guidelines when reverse was selected (fixed when the Ford’s SYNC connectivity system was updated);
- The paint colour of the rear spoiler not matching the rest of the car; and,
- Incorrect installation of the bootliner.
