Recalls: Hyundai HD Elantra
Overview
Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.
Recalls: Hyundai HD Elantra
Hyundai HD Elantra: missing warning label on spare wheel
In August 2007, a recall was issued for Hyundai HD Elantra vehicles due to a missing warning label on the spare wheel (PRA 2007/9442).
2007-08 Hyundai HD Elantra: fuel pump vulnerable to ethanol blends
In December 2008, a recall was issued for Hyundai HD Elantra models manufactured from 5 November 2007 to 28 June 2008 due to the potential for some components in the original fuel pump to be compromised by ethanol-blended fuel (PRA 2008/10490).
2009-10 Hyundai HD Elantra: loss of steering assistance
In August 2015, a recall was issued for Hyundai HD Elantra vehicles that were available for sale from 1 November 2009 and 30 April 2010. In these vehicles, loss of power to the ‘Motor Driven Power Steering’ (MDPS) system would increase the amount of steering effort required and reduce the driver’s control over the vehicle, posing a hazard to the driver and other road users; the power steering lamp would also illuminate in the instrument panel. The recalled HD Elantra vehicles had VINs in the range KMHDU41DAAU929998 to KMHDT41B9BU084665 (PRA 2015/14883).
Hyundai HD Elantra: front airbags could deploy inadvertently
In April 2016, a recall was issued for Hyundai HD Elantra vehicles because the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) deployment software could cause the front airbags to deploy inadvertently, i.e. in the absence of a collision. In particular, there was a risk of airbag deployment when the vehicle was travelling at low speed or when stationary. This unintended airbag deployment posed an accident hazard and injury risk for the vehicle occupants and other road users. The recalled Hyundai HD Elantra vehicles had VINs in the range KMHD*41***U404299 to KMHD*41***U826310 (PRA 2016/15385).
2005-11 Hyundai HD Elantra: ABS module may short circuit
In May 2020, recall campaign 01D010 was issued for Hyundai HD Elantra vehicles that were manufactured between 17 August 2005 and 14 May 2011. Due to a manufacturing error, an electronic control circuit board in the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) module would short circuit when the components were exposure to moisture. The short circuit posed a risk of an engine compartment fire, even when the vehicle was turned off, as the circuit was constantly powered – this also increased the risk of a collision and the risk of injury to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders. The short circuit did not, however, affect the functioning of the brake system. Until the recalled vehicles had a relay kit installed on the circuit board (to prevent the power surge and risk of fire), these vehicles needed to be parked in an open space and away from flammable materials. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18267.
2008-09 model year Hyundai HD Elantra: Takata airbag recall
In September 2020, recall campaign 01D042 was issued for 2008-09 model year Hyundai HD Elantra vehicles. These vehicles had Takata driver airbags and the wafer propellants within these airbags could absorb moisture over time. This could cause excessive pressure in the airbag inflator housing in the event of deployment which, in turn, could cause the housing to rupture and project metal fragments towards vehicle occupants. Furthermore, the airbag could under-inflate in the event of a collision and not protect the driver as intended. Both circumstances increased the risk of serious injury or death to vehicle occupants. As part of the recall, drivers were to stop driving the vehicle until the driver airbag module could be replaced. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18456.

2006-09 Hyundai HD Elantra: knocking noise from steering #1
InNovember 2010, a technical bulletin was issued for Hyundai HD Elantra vehicles that were produced prior to July 2009. In these vehicles, the driver may notice a knocking noise from the steering column – this was attributed to excessive movement of the universal intermediate shaft. There were two repair methods for this complaint:
- If the dealer could not detect any abnormal sounds, 1) the shaft bolts were to be removed, 2) loctite was to be applied to the bolt threads and 3) the upper and lower universal joints were to be re-torqued to 30-35 Nm; and,
- If the dealer detected some abnormal noises or knocks from the steering system, the intermediate shaft was to be removed from the EPS column and the universal joints of the shaft were to be inspected for damage. The steering rack input shaft splines were also to be inspected for damage. If the splines were damaged or worn, the intermediate shaft was to be replaced with an improved type.
2006-11 Hyundai HD Elantra: knocking from steering #2
In May 2014, Hyundai Motor Corporation issued Technical Service Bulletin 14-ST-002-1 for a range of Hyundai models, including the 2006-11 Hyundai HD Elantra. According to the technical bulletin, the flexible rubber coupling in the motor driven power steering (MDPS) assembly could deteriorate over time and cause a ‘clicking’ or ‘thud’ type noise when the steering wheel was turned.
To fix, the flexible rubber coupling was to be removed, along with all perished rubber – compressed air was recommended. A new coupling was then to be installed in its place and aligned with the electric power steering motor. The part number for the flexible rubber coupling was 56315-2K000-FFF; the revised coupling had the same part number, but it was marked ‘4P’.
According to the bulletin, there were no steering performance issues associated with deterioration of the rubber coupling.
Hyundai HD Elantra: other problems and faults
- If it is impossible to shift out of ‘park’, the gearshift interlock module has likely failed.
- For early Hyundai HD Elantra models, water may leak into the vehicle from the top of the windscreen due to a lack of sealant at the factory.
- The Elantra’s rear seats may not fold down properly because the release handle pops back in when pulled.
