2001-02 Hyundai Elantra: brake fluid leak
In September 2003, a recall was issued for Hyundai XD Elantra models manufactured from 1 April 2001 to 16 December 2002 due to a condition in which the brake pipes may rub on the front sub-frame – this could cause the pipes to wear and leak brake fluid, potentially causing the service brake to fail (PRA 2003/6473).

2004-05 Hyundai XD Elantra: gear lever knob cab may be broken
In April 2005, Hyundai issued technical bulletin 5-60-P20-XD for Hyundai XD Elantra vehicles that had manual transmissions and were manufactured from 1 December 2004 to 31 January 2005. In these vehicles, the gear lever knob cap may have been broken due to over-tightening of the knob onto the gear shift lever. For vehicles that had not yet been delivered, the knob was to be replaced (part number 43711-2D000 for PVC knob or 43711-2D200 for the leather knob); for delivered vehicles, the knob cap was to be replaced (part number 43712-2D000). The affected Hyundai XD Elantra vehicles had VINs in the range MHDM41D95U031970 to KMHDM51DR5U158559.
2000-02 Hyundai XD Elantra: SRS warning light may illuminate
In 2009, Hyundai UK issued a ‘non-code action’ for Hyundai Elantra vehicles that were manufactured from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2002. For affected Hyundai Elantra vehicles, the SRS warning light could illuminate as a result of the rear passenger disturbing wiring (NCA/2009/002).
2002-03 Hyundai XD Elantra: incorrect suspension metallurgy
In 2010, Hyundai UK issued a ‘non-code action’ for Hyundai Elantra vehicles that were manufactured from 1 January 2002 to 27 May 2003 because the suspension metallurgy could be incorrect (NCA/2010/022).
Hyundai XD Elantra: other problems and faults
- The valves in the Hyundai XD Elantra’s 2.0-litre engine can become noisy and should therefore be checked and adjusted as necessary every 100,000 kilometres.
- For Hyundai Elantra models with manual transmissions, a squeaking or squawking noise when the clutch pedal is pressed or released indicates that revised bushings are required for the release shaft.
- While the gearshift from park to reverse or drive is harsh in many models, an excessively harsh gearshift, including other gears, may require the transmission control module to be replaced. For gearshift flaring – where the engine surges between shifts – reprogramming the transmission control module may rectify the problem.
- The electrical connectors in the doors may corrode, particularly in corrosive environments, causing the speakers, power-operated windows and locks to fail.
