Recalls & faults: Jeep MK Compass (2007-16)

Recalls: Jeep MK Compass

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: Jeep MK Compass

2006 Jeep MK Compass: ABS progarm may cause rear wheel lock-up

In March 2007, a recall was issued for Jeep MK Compass vehicles that were manufactured from 7 September 2006 to 18 November 2006 (MDH 090707-111801). In these vehicles, the software programmed into the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) control module may cause the rear wheels to lock up under certain braking conditions (PRA 2007/9086).

2007 model year Jeep MK Compass: accelerator pedal may stick

In June 2010, a recall was issued for 2007 model year MK Compass vehicles. In these vehicles, the accelerator pedal may stick during vehicle operation – this could cause a serious accident and injury (PRA 2010/12930).

2012 Jeep MK Compass: defective fuel transfer tube and stall condition

In June 2013, a recall was issued for 2012 Jeep Compass vehicles due to a defective fuel transfer tube. As such, fuel flow could be restricted and the engine may stall in operating conditions such as high temperatures, high altitudes and the use of fuel with high vapour pressure. If the vehicle were to stall unexpectedly, this would pose a safety hazard to the driver and other road users (PRA 2013/13618).

2010-12 Jeep MK Compass: non-deployment of seatbelt pretension and airbags #1

In June 2013, a recall was issued for 2010-2012 Jeep Compass vehicles due to an Occupant Restraint Control Module (ORC) software error. During low speed roll-over events, the software error could result in non-deployment of the seatbelt pretensioner and/or side curtain airbags, thereby increasing the risk of injury to occupants (PRA 2013/13637).

2010-14 Jeep MK Compass: airbag and seatbelt pre-tensioner may not deploy #2

In October 2016, a recall was issued for 2010-14 Jeep MK Compass vehicles because a short circuit could cause a negative voltage signal to be transmitted from the front impact sensor wires to the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) in the event of a collision. This, in turn, could cause a ‘loss of air bag and seat belt pretensioner deployment capability’, increasing the risk of injury to the occupants (PRA 2016/15680).

2014 model year Jeep MK Compass: daytime running light and indicator

In December 2013, a recall was issued for 2014 model year Jeep Compass vehicles. In these vehicles, the opposite daytime running light – rather than the adjacent – would turn off when the turn signal was activated. As a result, the vehicle did not comply with vehicle homologation requirement ECE R48 (PRA 2013/13930).

2015 Jeep MK Compass: power steering fluid leak

In February 2016, a recall was issued for 2015 Jeep MK Compass vehicles because the power steering hose clamp may not have been installed correctly during the manufacturing process. As a result, the low-pressure power steering return hose may detach and cause a large volume of power steering fluid to leak. If the power steering fluid came in contact with an ignition source, a fire in the engine compartment would occur (PRA 2016/15174).

2006-09 Jeep MK Compass: park brake may not engage

In July 2019, recall campaign G15 was issued for Jeep Compass vehicles that were available for sale from 6 June 2006 to 12 June 2009. In these vehicles, the length of the rear wheel hub mounting bolts could prevent the park brake from being applied. Under certain conditions, an inability to engage the parking brake could enable unintended movement of the vehicle and this posed a hazard to vehicle occupants, road users and bystanders. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2019/17640.

2006-10 Jeep MK Compass: headlamp levelling may not work properly

In July 2019, recall campaign G31 was issued for Jeep MK Compass vehicles that were available for sale from 1 June 2006 to 31 January 2010. The Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) in these vehicles may have been configured incorrectly and this may prevent the headlamp levelling system from operating properly. This could affect the performance of the headlights and increase the risk of a collision. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2019/17630.

Jeep MK Compass: engine doesn’t start/crank

In July 2008, Technical Service Bulletin 08-007-09 REV A was issued for 2007-08 Jeep MK Compass vehicles that were manufactured on or before 5 May 2008 because the engine may not crank or start due to electronic lock-up of the Wireless Control Module (WCM) – also known as the Sentry Key Remote Entry Module (SKREEM) – and the remote keyless entry (RKE) system does not operate. This may occur because of an electrostatic charge within the Wireless Control Module (WCM). To fix, the WCM needed to be replaced.

2010 Jeep Compass: front door latches may corrode

In 2013, Jeep UK issued a ‘non-code action’ for Jeep Compass vehicles that were manufactured from 1 March 2010 to 30 September 2010. For these Jeep Compass vehicles, the front door latches could corrode – this could result in not being able to open the doors, including when people were in the cabin. For affected vehicles, both front door latches were to be replaced (NCA/2013/011).

Jeep Compass: Problems and faults

  • Noises when the air conditioning is running may be from debris, requiring the air conditioning blower to be cleaned; a screen could also be installed on the air intake duct to prevent a recurrence.
  • The odometer/trip switch may not work due to a problem with the network – if so, the instrument cluster module needs to be re-flashed.
