Recalls: Lexus AL20 RX

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: Lexus AL20 RX

2015-16 Lexus AL20 RX 450h, RX 350 and RX 200t: passenger front airbag

In September 2016, a recall was issued for 2015-16 Lexus RX 450h, RX 350 and RX 200t vehicles. In these vehicles, the front passenger airbag contained propellant wafers that may have been improperly welded and/or mis-assembled during the manufacturing process. As a result, the airbag may partially inflate and deploy unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a collision and injury to the occupants (PRA 2016/15650). The recalled vehicles were as follows –

  • RX 450h: manufactured from 28 November 2015 to 15 February 2016, and VINs in the range JTJ BGMCA # 02002251 to JTJ BGMCA # 02005401;
  • RX 350h: manufactured from 9 December 2015 to 3 February 2016, and VINs in the range JTJ BZMCA # 02005177 to JTJ BZMCA # 02007381; and,
  • RX 200t: manufactured from 23 December 2015 to 18 February 2016, and VINS in the range JTJ ZAMCA # 02002617 to JTJ ZAMCA # 02003949.

2015 Lexus RX 200t, RX 350 and RX 450h: airbags could be de-activated

In February 2018, a recall was issued for Lexus RX 200t, RX 350 and RX 450 vehicles that were manufactured from 30 September 2015 to 25 December 2015. Over time, insulation layers of the Integrated Circuit (IC) chip within the airbag system could peel and create an open circuit in the IC chip. If this occurred, the airbag warning light would illuminate and the side/curtain and/or front airbags could be de-activated – this increased the risk of occupant injury in the event of a collision (PRA 2018/16584). The recalled vehicles had VINs in the following ranges –

  • Lexus RX 200t: JTJ ZAMCA # 02000113 to JTJ ZAMCA # 02006204;
  • Lexus RX 350: JTJ BZMCA # 02000129 to JTJ BZMCA # 02006204; and,
  • Lexus RX 450h: JTJ BGMCA # 02000138 to JTJ BGMCA # 02002855.

2017-19 Lexus AL20 RX 350, 350L, 450h and 450hL: low-pressure fuel pump may stop working

In April 2020 and November 2020, recall campaigns VGG17 and VGG05 were issued for Lexus AL20 RX 350, RX 350L, RX 450h and RX 450hL vehicles that were manufactured from July 2017 to September 2019. In these vehicles, the low-pressure fuel pump could stop operating – if this occurred, the engine may stall and the vehicle may not restart; alternatively, the engine may not run smoothly. Beyond this, warning lights and messages may be displayed on the instrument panel. To fix, the low-pressure fuel pump was to be replaced. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18243.
