Recalls: Mazda DK CX-3

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: Mazda DK CX-3

Mazda CX-3: front suspension strut not secured to steering knuckle

In April 2016, a recall was issued for Mazda DK CX-3 vehicles that had VINs in the range JM0DK*W**10065 to JM0DK*W**116165. In these vehicles, the lower nut and bolt that secured the front suspension strut to the steering knuckle may not have been tightened with sufficient torque – this could cause the nut to loosen and fall off, adversely affecting one or both side of the front suspension. At worst, the front shock absorber and steering knuckle may separate, causing a loss of steering control. The recalled Mazda DK CX-3 vehicles were available for sale from 22 February 2013 to 15 December 2015 (PRA 2016/15311).

Mazda CX-3: tailgate could corrode and cause injury

In September 2016, a recall was issued for Mazda DK CX-3 vehicles because an inappropriate type of paint was used on the end-cap of the external body of the Liftgate Stay Dampers (struts). In regions where exposure to salt occurred, surface corrosion may result. If the corrosion was not addressed and continued, the external body may swell such that the end-cap may split and break as the rear liftgate (tailgate) was opened. At worst, people nearby may be at risk of injury from components dislodged by the pressurised gas contained in the Liftgate Stay Damper (PRA 2016/15630).

2015-17 Mazda DK CX-3 Diesel: engine may run at high RPM uncontrollably

In May 2018, a recall was issued for Mazda DK CX-3 vehicles that had diesel engines and were available for sale in Australia from 22 February 2015 to 24 November 2017. If the engine was operated in high revs in an unloaded condition (i.e. in Park or Neutral), residual oil could accumulate in the engine intake system and be drawn into the engine. If this occurred, the engine could enter an ‘over run’ condition whereby the engine would run at high RPM uncontrollably until the engine either failed or was damaged – this could pose a hazard to vehicle occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled Mazda DK CX-3 Diesel vehicles, please see PRA 2018/16782.

2015-16 Mazda DK CX-3: knocking/squeaking noise from front shock absorber, creaking noise from front lower arm bushing

In October 2016, Mazda issued Technical Service Bulletin 02-010/16 for Mazda DK CX-3 vehicles that were manufactured prior to 7 March 2016 and had VINs preceding JM1 DK ****** 136727. In these vehicles, there may be a knocking or squeaking noise from the front shock absorber when driving on rough roads and/or when turning the steering wheel while the vehicle was stopped. According to the service bulletin, this noise may be due to stick/slip between the front strut bearing and coil spring. According to the technical bulletin, this problem for the CX-3 was to be rectified by installing a protector onto the coil spring.

To address this problem, the shape of the coil spring for Mazda CX-3 vehicles produced after 7 March 2016 was changed.
