1996-00 Mazda Eunos 800: Takata airbag recall and vehicle buyback

In January 2020, recall campaign R202001 was issued for Mazda Eunos 800 vehicles that were available for sale in Australia from 20 August 1996 to 30 November 2000. The driver’s airbags in these vehicles may have contained an NADI 5-AT inflator which could absorb moisture and degrade the airbag propellant. If the airbag was triggered, the airbag inflator housing could rupture and sharp metal fragments could be projected into the vehicle cabin at high speed – these fragments could kill or injury vehicle occupants; the airbag may also underinflate and not protect the driver as intended. As part of the recall, owners were advised that they should stop driving their vehicle immediately to arrange for an inspection. If the vehicle did have an NADI 5-AT inflator airbag, Mazda would offer to buy the vehicle at current market value. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2019/18092.
