Recalls: Mercedes-Benz X470 X-Class

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: Mercedes-Benz X470 X-Class

2018-19 Mercedes-Benz X470 X-Class: owner’s manual incorrect

In June 2019, recall campaign RC2672 was issued for Mercedes-Benz X470 X-Class vehicles that were available for sale in Australia from 1 February 2018 to 30 May 2019. In these vehicles, the operator’s manual incorrectly stated the maximum permissible combined roof load, the ‘ESP’ function was incorrectly stated for certain circumstances and some warning messages that may be displayed for the ‘Pre Safe’ function were not described. This incorrect or missing information could increase the risk of a collision. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2019/17596.

2018-19 Mercedes-Benz X470 X-Class: Active Brake Assist may brake unexpectedly

In August 2020, recall campaign RC2800 was issued for Mercedes-Benz X470 X-Class vehicles that were available for sale in Australia from 1 February 2018 to 30 August 2019. In vehicles fitted with the Active Brake Assist system, the system may mistakenly detect an obstacle and brake suddenly or unexpectedly. If this occurred, there was an increased risk of a collision and injury to vehicle occupants and other road users. To fix, the vehicle’s software was to be updated. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18449.

2018-20 Mercedes-Benz X470 X-Class: incorrect maximum roof loading

In August 2020, recall campaign RC2784 was issued for Mercedes-Benz X470 X-Class vehicles that were available for sale in Australia from 1 February 2018 to 29 May 2020. This recall campaign replaced and extended recall campaign RC2672 (PRA 2019/17596) since the operator manuals of the recalled vehicles contained an incorrect maximum roof loading. The loading in the operator’s manual was for the vehicle when stationary; when moving, however, the vehicle would experience additional pressure on the roof from a load and there the maximum safe loading should be less than that stated. If the roof loading exceeded the safe level – and specifically if a fibreglass canopy was installed – the support for the roof load could fail while the vehicle was moving. Furthermore, the roof load may shift unexpectedly and the canopy could break, causing the load to fall. In addition, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) may not be effective in the event of a collision or if the vehicle skidded or behaved unexpectedly, increased the risk of injury for vehicle occupants or other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18472.

2018-19 model year Mercedes-Benz X470 X-Class: steering fluid leak

In September 2020, recall campaign RC2818 was issued for 2018-19 model year Mercedes-Benz X470 X-Class vehicles. In these vehicles, a hydraulic connection on the steering gear could leak, causing a gradual loss of hydraulic steering fluid. In the event of a complete loss of hydraulic steering fluid, power steering assistance would be completely lost. While it would be possible to steer the vehicle, greater effort would be required and this increased the risk of a collision and injury to vehicle occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18551.

2018-19 Mercedes-Benz X470 X-Class: oil cooler return line could leak

In December 2021, recall campaign RC2960 was issued for 2018-19 Mercedes-Benz X470 X-Class vehicles. Due to a manufacturing issue with the return line of the oil cooler, the return line could leak oil onto the road. That oil would pose a hazard that increased the risk of a collision for vehicle occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005027.

2018-19 Mercedes-Benz X470 X-Class: rear window could shatter

In August 2022, recall campaign RC3037 was issued for 2018-19 Mercedes-Benz X470 X-Class vehicles. Due to a manufacturing defect, the rear window may have pressure on it due to a shrinking seal – this could cause the window to shatter. If this occurred, the window glass could break into small, compact pieces. This condition could increase the risk of a collision and therefore the risk of injury to vehicle occupants and other road users. If the vehicle was retrofitted with a Mercedes-Benz canopy, the technician would check whether rubber blocks were installed in teh rear area of the canopy. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005483.

2017-19 Mercedes-Benz X470 X-Class: rear axle radial shaft ring

In August 2023, recall campaign RC3190 was issued for 2017-19 Mercedes-Benz X470 X-Class vehicles. Due to a manufacturing defect, the rear axle radial shaft ring may not be adequately sealed – this could cause an oil leak that results in an unexpected reduction of braking performance. Reduced braking performance could increase the risk of a collision and therefore injury to vehicle occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005754.
