Overview
Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.
Recalls: Porsche 981 Boxster
2014-15 model year Porsche 981 Boxster: bonnet may open while driving
In November 2014, a recall was issued for 2014 and 2015 model year Porsche 981 Boxster vehicles because the lock bracket for the front cargo area may open unintentionally. If this occurred, the front cargo area/bonnet may open while driving, impairing the driver’s visibility and increasing the risk of an accident. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2014/14410.
2015-16 Porsche 981 Boxster: unintended airbag deployment
In September 2019, recall campaign AKB4 was issued for Porsche 981 Boxster vehicles that were available for sale from 23 June 2015 to 16 June 2016. These vehicles may have been fitted with an airbag control unit that had an ‘out of specification’ capacitor for maintaining the power supply. As a result, the airbags and/or seatbelt pretensioners may deploy unexpectedly, or may fail to deploy in the event of a collision. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2019/17812.
2012-14 Porsche 981 Boxster: rear suspension failure
In September 2021, recall campaign AMB7 was issued for 2012-14 Porsche 981 Boxster vehicles. Due to a manufacturing defect, the rear suspension may fail in extreme driving situations and this would result in a loss of vehicle control. Such loss of control increased the risk of serious injury or death to occupants and/or other road users, and damage to property. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-004963.

2013 model year Porsche 981 Boxster: water drain valves
In March 2013, Porsche issued Technical Information Bulletin WD06 for 2013 model year Porsche 981 Boxster and Boxster S vehicles. For these vehicles, Porsche initiated a voluntary workshop campaign because wax applied during cavity sealing may not have been completely dry. As a result, the wax may block water drain valves on the underbody of affected vehicles. To fix, the water drain valves were to be replaced.
2013 model year Porsche 981 Boxster: ‘Fault Electric parking brake’
In April 2013, Porsche issued Technical Information Bulletin WD08 for Porsche 981 Boxster and Boxster S vehicles that had six-speed manual transmissions. In these vehicles, implausible fault entries may be stored in the electric parking brake control unit because the monitoring function was too sensitive. As a result, the yellow warning message ‘Fault Electric parking brake’ may appear on the multi-function display even though there was no system fault present. The warning message would disappear when the ignition was switched off and on again.
To fix, the electric parking brake control unit was to be re-programmed.
2013 model year Porsche 981 Boxster: underbody protection in rear left wheel housing
In November 2013, Porsche issued Technical Information Bulletin WD53 for 2013 model year Porsche 981 Boxster and Boxster S vehicles. According to the bulletin, underbody protection in the rear left wheel housing may not have been applied according to specifications due to a programming error at a production station. As a result, this area could become corroded over the service life of the vehicle. To fix, underbody protection in the rear left wheel housing was to be ‘reworked’ and the affected area re-painted.
2013-14 Porsche 981 Boxster: multi-function display and service reminder indicator
In April 2014, Porsche issued Technical Information Bulletin WE02 for 2013-14 model year Porsche 981 Boxster vehicles. Due to a software error in the instrument cluster, these vehicles may exhibit the following symptoms:
- Failure of the multi-function display. Specifically, the display in the instrument cluster could stop working under certain conditions and start working again later; and,
- Implausible service reminders. The driver may be informed that a service is due although the mileage and date for a required service have not yet been reached.
To fix, the instrument cluster module was to be re-programmed.
