Problems and faults: Renault X56 Laguna
- A mouldy smell and/or condensation on the windscreen are indicative of a failed heater matrix. To replace the heater matrix, the dashboard has to be removed – this is a time-consuming process.
- Electrical systems can fail, including the alternator and automatic transmission multi-function switch.
- The Renault X56 Laguna’s automatic transmission fluid cooler – within the radiator – can split, enabling coolant to enter the transmission. The automatic transmission fluid should be dark red; black fluid is indicative of overheating.
- For models with manual transmissions, bearings have been reported to fail after six or seven years and between 100,000 and 130,000 kilometres.
- Clunking noises from the front suspension are indicative of worn anti-roll bar bushes.
- For Renault X56 Laguna models with 3.0-litre V6 engines, it is recommended that the timing belt, tensioner and water pump be changed every five years or 120,000 kilometres.
