Recalls: Subaru GC/GM Impreza WRX

  • In August 1999, a recall was issued for Subaru Impreza WRX Club Spec Evo 3 models that were delivered between 29 June 1999 and 23 July 1999. For these vehicles, the drivers’ side external door mirror was fitted with convex glass which was contrary to the Australian Design Rules (PRA 1999/4055).

Problems and faults: Subaru GC/GM Impreza WRX

  • The gearbox may be somewhat notchy in its operation – particularly for early models – but should not be noisy.
  • Crunching noises on fast upshifts from second to third gear, are indicative of synchromesh problems.
  • Bucking and jerking at slow speeds is due to a defective transfer clutch.
  • The knock sensors in the cylinder heads may fail – this may cause pinging under load.
  • The Impreza WRX had strict maintenance requirements: oil changes are recommended every 5000 km, coolant must be replaced annually and synthetic transmission oil was recommended.
