Problems and faults: Toyota A80 Supra

  • Valve stem seals are susceptible to leaks after 10 years or 130,000 kms. Common symptoms include a puff of blue smoke on start-up or on acceleration. While the seals aren’t expensive, labour for their replacement is.
  • Turbo seals may require replacement after 10 years or 130,000 kms.
  • While the turbochargers are reasonably robust, the first turbocharger generally fails first. As a result, a common modification is to replace the Supra’s twin turbochargers with a single turbocharger.
  • If the heater stops working, the heater matrix may require replacement – this requires the entire dashboard to be removed.
