2015-18 Toyota E180 Corolla Hybrid Hatch: hybrid system may not enter fail-safe mode

In August 2020, recall campaign VGG42 was issued for Toyota E180 Corolla Hybrid vehicles that were manufactured from 8 February 2015 to 27 April 2018. In certain situations, such as hard acceleration immediately after a component failure, the hybrid system may shut down rather than go into fail-safe mode. If this occurred, dashboard warning lights may illuminate and, in some models, a warning message may be displayed to the driver in the instrument panel. However, if the vehicle did not enter fail-safe mode as intended, the vehicle would behave as if in neutral and coast to a stop. While power steering and braking would remain operational, this operation could increase the risk of a collision and injury to vehicle occupants and other road users. to fix, the software for the vehicle’s Power Management control unit was to be updated. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18404.
