Recalls: Toyota XU20 Kluger

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: Toyota XU20 Kluger

2003-04 Toyota XU20 Kluger: door lock lever may contact body panel

In April 2004, a recall was issued for Toyota XU20 Kluger models manufactured from 30 May 2003 to 28 January 2004 due to a condition in which the door lock lever may contact the body panel if the door was closed very hard and the child protector lever was in the ‘lock’ position (PRA 2004/6952).

2003-05 Toyota XU20 Kluger: brake fluid leak

In October 2010, a recall was issued for Toyota XU20 Kluger models manufactured from 30 May 2003 to 23 November 2005 due to the brake fluid containing insufficient polymers, causing the brake master cylinder rear rubber seal to become dry and curl during brake application. This could result in brake fluid leaking from the rear of the brake master cylinder, causing a low level of brake fluid and the warning light to illuminate. If operated in this condition, brake pedal feel could change and braking performance could degrade over time. Owners were to contact their dealership for inspection and replacement of the rear rubber cup of the brake master cylinder (PRA 2010/12082). The recalled vehicles had VINs in the following ranges:

  • JTE EP21A# 00001001 to JTE EP21A# 00153745; and,
  • JTE HP21A# 00001023 to JTE HP21A# 00153671.

2004-05 Toyota XU20 Kluger: loss of power steering assistance

In November 2011, a recall was issued for Toyota XU20 Kluger models produced from 1 June 2004 to 31 March 2005 due to the insufficient application of an adhesive agent between the outer ring and torsional rubber damper of the crankshaft pulley – this could cause abnormal noises or sudden illumination of the of the charging system warning light. In rare cases, the belt for the power steering pump could become detached from the pulley, resulting in a sudden and unexpected increase in the amount of steering effort required (PRA 2011/12898). The recalled vehicles had VINs in the following ranges:

  • JTE EP21A# 0058030 to JTE EP21A# 00117939; and,
  • JTE HP21A# 00058030 to JTE HP21A# 00117939.

2006-07 Toyota XU20 Kluger: driver’s power window switch

In October 2012, a recall was issued for Toyota XU20 Kluger vehicles produced after 1 February 2006. In these vehicles, a sliding electrical contact module in the driver’s side power window master switch may have a ‘sticky’ feel during operation due to the non-uniform application of lubricant – this could cause wear to the internal sliding contact points. As a result, the switch may become inoperative. If, however, a commercially available lubricant was applied to rectify the operation, the switch assembly could potentially overheat and melt (PRA 2012/13327).

2003-07 Toyota XU20 Kluger: water leak at back door hatch

In January 2012, Toyota issued Technical Service Bulletin 0008-12 for all Toyota XU20 Kluger/Highlander vehicles (i.e. produced from 2000-07). In these vehicles, a cracked body seam sealer above the back door stay mount area could enable water to enter the vehicle. For the repair procedure, please refer to the technical service bulletin.

2004-05 model year Toyota XU20 Kluger: intermediate steering shaft noise

In September 2008, Toyota issued Technical Service Bulletin T-SB-0296-08 for 2004-05 model year Toyota Kluger/Highlander vehicles. In these vehicles, a clunk, pop or knock-type noise may be heard when the steering wheel is turned left or right. To fix, the intermediate steering shaft was removed, lubricated and re-fitted.

2004 model year Toyota XU20 Kluger: intermittent VSC and steering angle sensor

In November 2004, Toyota issued Technical Service Bulletin BR008-04 for Toyota Highlander/Kluger vehicles. These vehicles may experience an intermittent VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) after starting the engine and when accelerating straight ahead from rest – this condition was also accompanied by illumination of the instrument panel VSC light and an audible warning buzzer. To rectify this condition, the steering angle sensor was to be replaced since a revised sensor was introduced in production. For Australian-delivered vehicles, it is understood that this bulletin applied to seven-seat Toyota XU20 Kluger vehicles that had VINs prior to JTE EP21A # 40064768.

Toyota XU20 Kluger: other problems and faults

  • For four-wheel drive Kluger models, transmission fluid may leak from the right side oil seal of the transfer case.
  • The auto-close function for the moonroof may cease working; this can be fixed by ‘initializing’ or ‘normalizing’ the moonroof as per instructions in the owners’ manual.
