Recalls: Toyota XU50 Kluger

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

2014 Toyota XU50 Kluger: potential fuel leak

In September 2014, a recall was issued for Toyota XU50 Kluger vehicles that were manufactured from 2 May 2014 to 3 June 2014. In these vehicles, the end cap on the right-hand fuel delivery pipe in the engine bay may have been insufficiently welded – in this condition, fuel could leak from the fuel delivery pipe and pose a potential fire hazard (PRA 2014/14346). The recalled vehicles had VINs in the following ranges:

  • 5TD ZK3FH # 0S024922 to 5TD ZK3FH # 0S028314;
  • 5TD ZK3FH # 0S025566 to 5TD ZK3FH # 0S028177;
  • 5TD BK3FH # 0S044228 to 5TD BK3FH # 0S052945; and,
  • 5TD DK3FH # 0S044957 to 5TD DK3FH # 0S051104.

2014 Toyota XU50 Kluger: loss of power steering assistance

In March 2015, a recall was issued for Toyota XU50 Kluger vehicles that were manufactured from 15 August 2014 to 23 December 2014. In these vehicles, the circuit board for the Electric Power Steering (EPS) may have been damaged during production – this could result in a loss of power steering assistance and the illumination of the EPS warning lamp. The loss of power steering assistance would increase the amount of steering effort required – particularly at low speeds – and could increase the risk of an accident (PRA 2015/14595).

2017 Toyota XU50 Kluger: loss of power braking assistance

In April 2018, a recall was issued for 21 Toyota XU50 Kluger vehicles that were produced from 20-21 October 2017. During manufacture, a lubrication passage inside the brake booster vacuum pump may not have been properly machined. Oil may therefore not be distributed throughout the vacuum pump and this could cause the pump vane to break, in turn causing a sudden loss of power braking assistance. If this occurred, audible alerts and illuminated warning lights would warn the driver. For the VINs of the recalled Toyota XU50 Kluger vehicles, please see PRA 2018/16728.

2017-19 Toyota XU50 Kluger: low-pressure fuel pump may stop working

In April 2020 and November 2020, recall campaigns VGG17 and VGG05 were issued for Toyota XU50 Kluger vehicles that were manufactured from July 2017 to December 2019. In these vehicles, the low-pressure fuel pump could stop operating – if this occurred, the engine may stall and the vehicle may not restart; alternatively, the engine may not run smoothly. Beyond this, warning lights and messages may be displayed on the instrument panel. To fix, the low-pressure fuel pump was to be replaced. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18242.
