Recalls & faults: Volvo XC40 (2018-on)

Recalls: Volvo XC40

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

2020 Volvo XC40: brake booster connecting nut

In April 2020, recall campaign R19996 was issued for Volvo XC40 vehicles that were available for sale in Australia from 27 February 2020 to 18 March 2020. One of the nuts connecting the brake booster to the vehicle’s frame could be missing and this could impair braking performance. In turn, reduced braking performance increased the risk of injury for vehicle occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18263.

2019-20 Volvo XC40: AEB not working due to missing code

In April 2020, recall campaign R29998 was issued for 2019-20 Volvo XC40 vehicles that were available for sale in Australia from 22 March 2019 to 17 March 2020. Software code in the Active Safety Domain Master (ASDM) system was missing and this could result in the Automatic Emergency Brake (AEB) system not triggering the automatic brakes. If the driver failed to react to the AEB collision warning and the AEB system failed to activate the brakes, there was an increased risk of injury for vehicle occupants and other road users. To fix, the vehicle’s software was to be upgraded. The usual brake, collision warning and brake support systems for pedestrians and bicycles, however, were not affected. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18264.

2022-23 Volvo XC40: front suspension ball joint incorrectly attached

In July 2023, recall campaign R10244 was issued for 2022-23 Volvo XC40 vehicles. Due to a manufacturing defect, the left front suspension ball joint may have been incorrectly attached. This condition could result in a loss of vehicle control, which would increase the risk of a collision and injury to vehicle occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005727.

2023 Volvo XC40: left turn indicator not working

In January 2024, recall campaign R10256 was issued for 2023 Volvo XC40 vehicles. Due to a software issue, the left turn indicator lamp may not illuminate as intended. If this occurred, a warning would appear in the instrument cluster to alert the driver that the indicator was not operational. If the left turn indicator lamp did not illuminate as intended, other road users would be unaware that the driver intended to turn left. However, the left indicator functionality could be reset by switching the indicator off and on again. For this recall, the vehicle’s software was to be updated. The software was to be released as an ‘Over the Air’ update that owners could download to the vehicle themselves. But, if unable to update the car remotely, they could contact their Volvo dealer for the update. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005877.
