Review: Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari (2011-12)

Overview

Released in May 2011, the Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari was a light, three-door hatchback. Manufactured in Tychy, Poland, the front-wheel drive Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari was based on the Fiat 500 but powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine which was mated to a C510 version of Fiat’s five-speed ‘Dualogic’ semi-automatic transmission (with steering wheel gearshift paddles).

T-Jet engine

The 1.4-litre ‘T-Jet’ four cylinder petrol engine had a cast iron block, an aluminium cylinder head, a fixed geometry Garrett 1446 (GT1446) turbocharger, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and a compression ratio of 9.8:1. Furthermore,

  • the driver could activate a ‘Sport’ mode that engaged the turbocharger’s overboost function to temporarily increase peak torque to 250 Nm; and,
  • the 695 Tributo Ferrari was fitted with a ‘Record Monza’ variable back-pressure exhaust system for improved performance beyond 3000 rpm.

Dimensions and suspension

The 695 Tributo Ferrari was 3657 mm long, 1627 mm wide, 1485 mm tall and had a 2300 mm long wheelbase. The 695 Tributo Ferrari had MacPherson strut front suspension and torsion beam rear suspension (both with coil springs, gas-filled dampers and anti-roll bars).

Safety equipment

Standard safety equipment included dual front airbags, driver’s knee airbag, front-side airbags, full-length curtain airbags, ABS, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control, front seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters, and anti-submarining front seats.

Brakes

The 695 Tributo Ferrari had a Brembo braking package which included 305 mm by 28 mm cross-drilled and ventilated front brake discs with four-piston calipers and 240 mm by 11 mm solid drilled rear brake discs.

Euro NCAP crash testing

In Euro NCAP testing , a Fiat 500 fitted with a 1.2-litre engine received a five star adult occupant protection rating with a score of 34.91 out of 37. In the offset crash test, there was a slight risk of serious chest and leg injury for the front occupants. In the side impact test, there was a slight risk of serious chest injury for the driver.

Standard features for the 695 Tributo Ferrari included 17-inch alloy wheels with 205/40 R17 84W XL tyres, a six speaker stereo with MP3-compatibility and auxiliary inputs (USB/iPod), climate control air conditioning, ‘Abarth Corsa by Sabelt’ carbon-fibre front seats with leather trim, Bluetooth connectivity, xenon headlights, front fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, remote central locking, power windows and mirrors, a tilt adjustable steering wheel, height adjustable driver’s seat, rear privacy glass, tyre pressure monitoring, a trip computer and an immobiliser.

The 695 Tributo Ferrari was also fitted with a full-width carbon-fibre dashboard panel, non-slip aluminium front passenger footwell, an individually numbered build plate, unique scuff plates and a carbon-fibre front spoiler.
