Review: BMW E88.I 1-Series convertible (2008-11)
Overview
Released in May 2008, the BMW E88 Mk.I (E88.I) 1-Series convertible was a four-seat convertible with a soft-top roof. Manufactured in Germany, the rear-wheel drive 1-Series convertible range initially consisted of the 120i, 125i and 135i models. In November 2009 (i.e. for the 2010 model year), the range was expanded with the introduction of the 118d and 123d.
In May 2010, the 135i model was revised and fitted with a single turbo 3.0-litre six cylinder engine and available with a seven-speed double clutch transmission (DCT); even so, peak power and torque outputs remained the same. The full range is given in the table below.
Compared to the E82 1-Series coupe on which it was based, the E88 1-Series convertible was 12 mm lower (at 1411 mm), though total length (at 4360 mm), width (1748 mm) and wheelbase length (2660 mm) were unchanged. Furthermore, the 1-Series convertible had double-pivot front suspension with MacPherson struts and independent, five-link rear suspension. The 1-Series convertible’s power-operated, soft-top roof could open or close in 22 seconds and at speeds up to 40 km/h.
