Review: Hyundai FO.I Trajet (2000-04)

Overview

Released in May 2000, the Hyundai FO Series I (FO.I) Trajet (officially pronounced ‘Tra-shay’) was a seven-seat people mover. Manufactured in Ulsan, South Korea, the front-wheel drive Trajet was powered by a 2.7-litre V6 petrol engine that was mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The 2.7-litre G6BA ‘Delta’ V6 engine had an aluminium alloy cylinder block and head, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and a compression ratio of 10.0:1.

Based on a stretched EF-A Sonata platform, the Trajet had a 2-2-3 seating configuration. Compared to the Sonata, the FO Trajet was 25 mm shorter (at 4695 mm), but 22 mm wider (1840 mm), 300 mm taller (1710 mm) and had a 130 mm longer wheelbase (2830 mm). Furthermore, the Trajet was fitted with MacPherson strut front suspension with lower controls arms and coil springs and independent rear suspension with trailing control arms.

Safety equipment

Standard safety equipment for the Trajet GL included a driver’s airbag and front seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters; the Trajet GLS was further equipped with a front passenger’s airbag, ABS, electronic brake force distribution and rear disc brakes.

Euro NCAP crash testing

In Euro NCAP crash testing , a Trajet with a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine – and dual front airbags – was awarded a three star adult occupant protection rating with a score of 20 points. In the frontal offset crash test, the front occupants risked serious chest injuries while structures behind the fascia presented risks to the driver’s knees. Furthermore, there was evidence of the door hinges twisting and some welds at the A-pillar joining the floor pan to sill separating.

Features: Trajet GL and GLS

Standard features for the Trajet GL included a four speaker sound system, dual-zone air conditioning, sliding and foldable second row seats, 60/40 split and folding third row seats, rear fog lights, central locking, front power windows, power door mirrors, a tilt adjustable steering wheel, height adjustable driver’s seat, three 12 volt power outlets and an immobiliser.

Beyond this, the Trajet GLS added 15-inch alloy wheels, a six speaker sound system with CD player, cruise control, driver’s seat lumbar adjustment, tilt-adjustable front seat head restraints, overhead console with map lights and roof rails.

2002 Trajet World Cup

In May 2002, World Cup editions of the Trajet GL and GLS variants were released. The GL World Cup edition was distinguished by its 15-inch alloy wheels, DVD player, 1350kg tow-bar kit, roof bars and headlight protectors. The GLS World Cup was further equipped with a bonnet protector, slim-line weathershields and World Cup floor mats.
