Review: Mazda EC Eunos 30X (1996-97)

3.5 stars

  • Refined and free-revving V6 petrol engine
  • High standard of fit and finish
  • Engine lacks low-rev torque

Overview

Released in June 1996, the Mazda EC Eunos 30X was a small, three-door liftback. Manufactured in Hiroshima, the front-wheel drive Eunos 30X was powered by a 1.8-litre V6 petrol engine – with double overhead cams, a variable length intake manifold and a 7000 rpm redline – that was mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The Eunos 30X range initially consisted of Luxury variants, though these were discontinued in December 1996. In May 1997, the Eunos 30X returned with Sport variants.

The Eunos 30X was 4220 mm long, 1695 mm wide, 1310 mm tall and had a 2455 mm long wheelbase. Furthermore, the Eunos 30X had MacPherson strut front suspension, while the rear suspension consisted of twin trapezoidal links and incorporated a passive rear wheel steering function.

The Eunos 30X was initially offered for sale in Australia in 1994 under Mazda’s Eunos brand before being incorporated into the Mazda range; the Eunos 30X was also sold in other markets as the Mazda MX-3.
