Review: Mitsubishi JF.I 3000GT (1992-94)

Overview

Released in October 1992, the Mitsubishi JF Series I (JF.I) 3000 GT was a two-door performance coupe. Manufactured in Nagoya, Japan, the four-wheel drive 3000 GT was powered by a 3.0-litre twin turbocharged V6 petrol engine that was mated to a five-speed Getrag manual transmission.

6G72 engine

The 3.0-litre 6G72 V6 engine had an independent turbocharger and intercooler on each bank, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and a compression ratio of 8.0:1. The engine required premium unleaded petrol.

Dimensions and suspension

The 3000GT was 4560 mm long, 1840 mm wide, 1285 mm tall and had a 2470 mm long wheelbase.

The 3000GT had MacPherson strut front suspension and double wishbone rear suspension; furthermore, the electronically controlled suspension (ECS) had the ability to vary shock absorbers damping rates according to road conditions and driver behaviour.

The 3000 GT had a full-time four-wheel drive system which had a double planetary design centre differential with a viscous coupling viscous centre. In normal conditions, the system provided a 45:55 front:rear torque split.

The 3000GT was also fitted with a hydraulic four-wheel steering system which could angle the rear wheels in the same direction as the front wheels at speeds over 50 km/h and a viscous coupling rear differential.

Safety equipment

Standard safety equipment for the 3000 GT included a driver’s airbag and ABS.

Features

Standard features for the 3000 GT included 17-inch alloy wheels, a six speaker sound system with graphic equaliser, radio and cassette player, air conditioning, a five-way power adjustable driver’s seat, cruise control, front fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, central locking, power windows and heated mirrors, a tilt adjustable steering wheel and an alarm system.
