Review: Nissan S14.I 200SX (1994-96)

Overview

Released in October 1994, the Nissan S14 Series I (S14.I) 200SX was a rear-wheel drive coupe. Manufactured in Iwaki, Japan, the S14 200SX was powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that was mated to either five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions. As per the table below, the S14.I 200SX range consisted of three variants: Sports Limited, Sports and Luxury.

SR20DET engine and transmissions

The SR20DET engine had an aluminium block and cylinder head, double overhead camshafts, a Garrett T28 turbocharger which provided peak boost pressure of 0.73 bar (10.6 psi), an intercooler, computer controlled wastegate, four valves per cylinder, Nissan’s variable intake valve timing control system (NVCS) and a compression ratio of 8.5:1.

Dimensions and suspension

Compared to its S13 180SX predecessor (which was not imported by Nissan Australia and only available as a private import), the S14 200SX was 16 mm shorter (at 4505 mm), 41 mm wider (1730 mm), 5 mm taller (1295 mm) and had a 49 mm longer wheelbase (2525 mm).

The 200SX had MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension.

Safety equipment

Standard safety equipment for the 200SX Sports Limited variant consisted of a driver’s airbag. The Sports variant was further equipped with ABS, while the Luxury was also fitted with a front passenger airbag.

Brakes

The S15 200SX had 280 mm by 30 mm ventilated front brake discs and 258 mm by 9 mm solid rear discs.

Features

Standard features for the 200SX Sports Limited included 16-inch alloy wheels, a four speaker sound system with radio and cassette player, air conditioning, remote central locking, power windows, power mirrors and an alarm. The 200SX was also fitted with a limited slip rear differential as standard.

Beyond this, the Sports variant added a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift and rear spoiler. The range-topping Luxury was distinguished by its six speaker sound system with CD player, front fog lights, power-operated sunroof and front spoiler.

Review: Nissan S14.II 200SX (1996-00)

Overview

Released in October 1996, the Nissan S14 Series II (S14.II) 200SX introduced a subtle facelift and a revised range as the Sports Limited variant was renamed ‘Limited’. Visually, the S14.II 200SX could be identified by its more angular front mask which included new headlights, front bumpers and grilles.
