Review: Proton CM.I Gen.2 (2004-05)

Overview

Released in October 2004, the Proton CM Series I (CM.I) Gen.2 was a small, five-door hatchback. Manufactured in Tanjung Malim, Malaysia, the front-wheel drive Gen.2 was powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that was mated to either a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. As per the table below, the Gen.2 range consisted of three variants: the entry-level L-Line, M-Line and range-topping H-Line.

CamPro S4PH engine

The 1.6-litre CamPro S4PH petrol engine had double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and a compression ratio of 10.0:1.

Dimensions and suspension

Compared to the CC Persona which it replaced, the Gen.2 was 40 mm longer (at 4310 mm), 35 mm wider (1725 mm), 50 mm taller (1435 mm) and had a 100 mm longer wheelbase (2600 mm). Furthermore, the Gen.2 had MacPherson strut front suspension and independent, multi-link rear suspension (both with coil springs and anti-roll bars).

Safety equipment

Standard safety equipment for the Gen.2 included dual front airbags and front seatbelt pretensioners. The M-Line was further equipped with ABS and electronic brake force distribution, while the H-Line was also fitted with front side airbags.

Features

Standard features for the Gen.2 L-Line included a four speaker sound system with CD player, air conditioning, remote central locking, power mirrors and windows, a height adjustable driver’s seat, tilt-adjustable steering wheel, trip computer and an immobiliser.

The Gen.2 M-Line added 15-inch alloy wheels and cruise control for automatic models, while the range-topping Gen.2 H-Line also featured with climate control air conditioning, rear parking sensors, front and rear fog lights and a rear spoiler.

Review: Proton CM.II Gen.2 (2005-09)

Overview

Released in November 2005, the CM Series II (CM.II) Gen.2 introduced new switchgear, seat design, interior fabrics, improved panel fit and low-rev power delivery; peak power and torque outputs, however, were unchanged.

Review: Proton CM.III Gen.2 (2009-13)

Overview

Released in 2009, the CM Series III (CM.III) Gen.2 introduced a revised line-up, with the L-Line, M-Line and H-Line variants replaced by the G, GX and GXR, respectively. Standard safety equipment and features, however, were substantially the same for the three variant grades.
