Review: Suzuki RH4.I Liana (2001-04)
Overview
Released in October 2001, the Suzuki RH4 Series I (RH4.I) Liana was initially available as a five-door hatchback, with sedans following in August 2002. Manufactured in Kosai, Japan, the front-wheel drive RH4.I Liana was powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that was mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.
M16A engine
The RH4.I Liana was powered by Suzuki’s 1.6-litre M16A engine which had all-aluminium construction, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and a compression ratio of 9.7:1.
Dimensions and suspension
The RH4 Liana hatchback was 4230 mm long, 1690 mm wide, 1550 mm tall and had a 2480 mm long wheelbase; the sedan models, however, were 120 mm longer (at 4350 mm) and 5 mm lower (1545 mm). Furthermore, the RH4 Liana had MacPherson strut suspension front and rear.

Safety equipment
Standard safety equipment for the Suzuki RH4.I Liana included dual front airbags and front seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters. From August 2003, the Liana was further equipped with ABS.
Features: Liana GA and GS
Standard features for the Suzuki Liana GA included a four speaker sound system with CD player, air conditioning, remote central locking, power mirrors and windows, a tilt adjustable steering wheel, a height adjustable driver’s seat, roof rails and an immobiliser. The Liana GS was similarly equipped but distinguished by its sports body kit.
Replacing the GA in August 2003, the Liana GS was further equipped with 15-inch alloy wheels and front fog lights.
Review: Suzuki RH4.II Liana (2004-07)
Overview
Released in March 2004, the Suzuki RH4 Series II (RH4.II) Liana sedan and hatchback featured a more powerful 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with variable valve timing, updated interior and improved safety equipment. Inside, the RH4.II Liana featured a new dashboard with analogue instruments, new black seat cushion material and more supportive front.
In September 2004, the RH4.II Liana underwent a minor cosmetic update with new headlights, grille, front bumpers, alloy wheel designs and, for hatchback models, tail-lights. Furthermore, the GS variant name was discontinued.

Safety equipment
Standard safety equipment for the RH4.II Liana was initially unchanged. From September 2004, however, the RH4.II Liana was fitted with electronic brake force distribution.
Features: Liana and GS
Standard features for the RH4.II Liana were extended to include a seven speaker sound system (including subwoofer) and steering wheel audio controls. From September 2004, the Liana was fitted with a six-stack CD player, chrome interior highlights and a chrome exhaust tip.
