Review: Volkswagen 1F.I Eos (2007-11)

Overview

Released in February 2007, the Volkswagen 1F Series I (1F.I) Eos was a two-door, four-seat convertible with a retractable metal roof. Manufactured in Palmela, Portugal, the front-wheel drive VW Eos was available with either a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine (the ‘2.0 TDI’ variants) or a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit (‘2.0 TFSI’); transmission options consisted of a six-speed manual or double clutch transmission (DCT, or Volkswagen’s Direct Shift Gearbox).

In August 2008, Volkswagen changed its variant naming conventions, such that the 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TFSI were replaced by the 103TDI and 147TSI, respectively. In May 2010, the 147TSI was replaced by the more powerful 155TSI.

Dimensions and body

Underpinned by Volkswagen’s PQ45 platform, the Volkswagen Eos was 4407 mm long, 1791 mm wide, 1443 mm tall and had a 2578 mm long wheelbase. The Eos had a five-piece folding steel roof – with a sliding and tilting glass section – which could be opened or closed in twenty-five seconds. With the roof up, the Eos had 380 litres of cargo space; when down, however, this decreased to 205 litres.

Suspension and steering

The VW Eos had MacPherson strut front suspension (as per the Mk.5 Golf) and multi-link independent rear suspension (as per the Mk. Passat); the Eos also had an electromechanical power steering system.

Safety equipment

Standard safety equipment for the Volkswagen 1F Eos included dual front airbags, head/thorax airbags which doubled as lateral and window airbags, ABS, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control and front seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters.

The Eos was also fitted with rollbars which deployed from behind the rear bench in 0.25 seconds once triggered.

Euro NCAP crash testing

In Euro NCAP crash testing , a 2007 VW Eos fitted with a 1.6-litre engine received a four star adult occupant protection rating with a score of 31.35 out of 37. In the frontal offset impact, protection from serious leg injury was marginal for the driver as structures in the dashboard were hazardous to the knees and femurs. In the side impact test, maximum points were awarded. In the pole test, however, the front part of the roof detached from its connection with the windscreen pillar on the passenger side and the driver’s door became unlatched – the latter resulted in a one point deduction.

Features: Volkswagen Eos

Standard features for the Volkswagen Eos included 17-inch alloy wheels, an eight speaker sound system with a six-disc CD changer, dual-zone climate control air conditioning, a ventilated glovebox, cruise control, front and rear fog lamps, LED tail lights, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, rear parking sensors, a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, remote central locking, power windows and heated mirrors (with a power-operated folding function), a height and reach adjustable steering wheel, height adjustable front seats, tyre pressure monitoring, a 12 volt power outlet, wind deflector, an electrochromatic rear view mirror, trip computer and an immobiliser.

2010 Eos White Night edition

In January 2010, the limited-run Eos White Night edition was released; it was distinguished by its 18-inch ‘Budapest’ wheels, lowered sports suspension, black nappa leather seats, heated front seats, black leather door and side trim, ‘Candy White’ paint finish with ‘Deep Black’ pearlescent paint for the roof and black mirror covers.
