Mercedes-Benz M270 and M274 engines (2011-on)

[su_image_carousel source=”media: 51979,51980,51981,51982,51983,51984,51985″]The M270 and M274 were turbocharged, inline four-cylinder petrol engines that were developed for transverse and longitudinal applications, respectively. Replacing the M266 and M271 engines, the M270 and M274 engines were manufactured at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Stuttgart Untertürkheim and at MDC Power GmbH in Kölleda.

The M270 and M274 engines had aluminium blocks and cylinder heads, cast hollow crankshafts, double overhead camshafts (chain-driven), variable intake and exhaust camshaft timing, and four valves per cylinder. The engines were also available with an ECO start-stop function that enabled them to shut down when the vehicle was stationary in traffic to conserve fuel.

The 1.6-litre engines were available with Mercedes-Benz’s ‘Camtronic’ system (see video below) which used a smaller intake cam in partial load ranges for higher intake manifold pressure. In the M270 and M274 engines, three-stage load control could be achieved in the following manner:

  • At very low loads, the air flow rate was conventionally set by the throttle valve;
  • For medium loads, the cylinder charge was set on the intake camshaft while the throttle valve was opened; and,
  • At higher loads, intake manifold pressure was further increased through the turbocharger.

The M270 and M274 engines were available with three transmission types:

  • Six-speed manual transmissions;
  • Seven-speed double-clutch transmissions (7G-DCT) for front-wheel drive vehicles; and,
  • Seven-speed automatic transmissions (7G-Tronic Plus) for rear-wheel drive vehicles.
