Recalls: Mitsubishi Mk.2 Outlander

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: Mitsubishi Mk.2 Outlander

2006-07 Mitsubishi Mk.2 Outlander: exhaust extension could detach

In January 2008, a recall was issued for Mitsubishi Outlander XLS and LS variants with the CH5 option and manufactured from 2 November 2006 to 16 July 2007. In these vehicles, the mounting bracket of the chrome exhaust extension may fracture. At worse, the exhaust extension may detach from the vehicle, posing a hazard to other road users (PRA 2008/9787).

2006-08 Mitsubishi Mk.2 Outlander: brake light may not illuminate

In December 2008, a recall was issued for Mitsubishi Outlander models manufactured prior to May 2008. For these vehicles, the brake light switch may have been contaminated with silicon grease during installation; this could result in high resistance at the contact point and prevent the brake light from illuminating (PRA 2008/10539). The recalled vehicles had VINs in the ranges:

  • JMFXLCW6W7U000201 to JMFXLCW6W8Z001923;
  • JMFXNCW5W8Z000101 to JMFXNCW5W8Z000753; and,
  • JMFXTCW5W7U000201 to JMFXTCW5W8Z003859.

2008-09 Mitsubishi Mk.2 Outlander: loss of initial power braking assistance

In March 2009, a recall was issued for 2008 and 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander models. After starting, if these vehicles were only driven at low speeds with minimal or no throttle opening, an increased brake pedal effort may be required on the first braking application because of brake booster check valve sticking (PRA 2009/10694). The recalled vehicles had VINs in the ranges:

  • JMFXTCW5W8Z000824 to JMFXTCW5W8Z006295; and,
  • JMFXTCW5W9Z000101 to JMFXTCW5W9Z002218.

2006-11 Mitsubishi ZG/ZH Outlander: loss of power steering assistance

In December 2014, a recall was issued for Mitsubishi ZG and ZH Outlander vehicles that had 2.4-litre 4B12 engines and were manufactured from 28 August 2006 to 5 January 2011. Due to the use of inappropriate material for the ancillary equipment V-ribbed belt, the resin pulley may wear unevenly. Consequently, the belt could be damaged and come off the pulley. If this occurred, the ‘charge lamp’ would illuminate, battery charge would be depleted such that electrical power would be lost and the engine may overheat. On vehicles with hydraulic power-assisted steering, increased steering effort would be required as power steering assistance ceased (PRA 2014/14462). The recalled vehicles had VINs in the following ranges:

  • JMF*NCW5W**000101 to JMF*NCW5W**000989; and,
  • JMF*TCW5W**000004 to JMF*TCW5W**007189.

2007-09 Mitsubishi ZG/ZH Outlander: brake lights may not illuminate

In December 2014, a recall was issued for Mitsubishi ZG and ZH Outlander vehicles that were manufactured from 9 January 2007 to 1 August 2009. Due to the poor conductivity of an insulating material, the brake lamp switch may not operate and it may not be possible to move the gear shift lever out of the ‘park’ position. If the brake lamp switch ceased operating, the brake lights would not illuminate, posing a potential accident hazard (PRA 2014/14466). The recalled vehicles had VINs in the following ranges:

  • 2007 model year, ZG/ZH Outlander 2.4i CVT: JMF XTCW5W7Z 000101 to JMF XTCW5W7Z 000102;
  • 2008 model year, ZG/ZH Outlander 2.4i CVT: JMF XTCW5W7Z 002934 to JMF XTCW5W7Z 002956;
  • 2009 model year, ZG/ZH Outlander 2.4i CVT: JMF XTCW5W9Z 000101 to JMF XTCW5W9Z 004980;

  • 2007 model year, ZG/ZH Outlander 3.0i auto: JMF XLCW6W7U 000829 to JMF XLCW6W7U 001117;
  • 2008 model year, ZG/ZH Outlander 3.0i auto: JMF XLCW6W8Z 001922 to JMF XLCW6W8Z 002364; and,
  • 2009 model year, ZG/ZH Outlander 3.0i auto: JMFX LCW6W9Z 000101 to JMFX LCW6W9Z 001176.

Mitsubishi ZG/ZH Outlander: lights may not illuminate

In June 2016, a recall was issued for Mitsubishi ZG and ZH Outlander vehicles because the turn signal and lighting switch connector terminals could become worn during switch operation due to insufficient rigidity – this could result in an accumulation of oxidised dust on the connector terminals. Furthermore, excessive dust accumulation could act as an insulator, affecting terminal conductivity. Continued usage in this conduction could cause conduction failure such that the following may fail to operate or only operate intermittently: the headlamps, turn signal lamps, parking lamp, fog lamps, tail lamp, number plate lamp and cabin lamp (PRA 2016/15466). The recalled Mitsubishi ZG and ZH Outlander vehicles had VINs in the following ranges:

  • JMFXLCW6W7U000201 to JMFXLCW6WCU000661;
  • JMFXNCW5W8Z000101 to JMFXNCW5WCU001306; and,
  • JMFXTCW5W7U000201 to JMFXTCW5WCU007201.

2009-10 model year Mitsubishi Outlander: headlights may turn off

In June 2016, a recall was issued for 2009 and 2010 ‘model year’ Mitsubishi Outlander vehicles because an inappropriate manufacturing process of an electrical part could cause the voltage inside the ETACS ECU to be unstable – this could turn the headlights off and/or cause the windscreen wipers to become inoperable, thereby posing an accident hazard to the driver and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled Mitsubishi Outlander vehicles, please see PRA 2016/15470.

2006-13 model year Mitsubishi ZG and ZH Outlander: wipers may not work

In June 2017, a recall was issued for Mitsubishi ZG and ZH Outlander vehicles that were manufactured from 28 November 2006 to 28 February 2013. Water may enter between the bonnet and windshield in these vehicles, causing the front wiper link ball joint to corrode – this could cause the wiper link to separate and the wipers to become inoperative. If driving in the rain, the loss of wiper function could reduce visibility and increase the risk of an accident. For the VINs of the recalled Mitsubishi ZG and ZH Outlander vehicles, please see PRA 2017/16144.

2007-12 model year Mitsubishi ZG/ZH Outlander: windscreen wipers may stop working

In August 2017, a recall was issued for 2007-12 model year Mitsubishi ZG and ZH Outlander vehicles. In these vehicles, the structure of the front deck could allow water that accumulated around the wiper motor breather hole to be drawn into the motor when it cooled down after use. As a result, internal parts of the front windscreen wiper motor could ruse or seize, rendering the wipers inoperative and impairing the driver’s visibility. For the VINs of the recalled Mitsubishi ZG and ZH Outlander vehicles, please see PRA 2017/16241.

2006-11 Mitsubishi ZG/ZH Outlander: sunroof glass could detach from frame

February 2018, a recall was issued for 2007-10 ‘model year’ Mitsubishi ZG/ZH Outlander vehicles that were available for sale from 28 November 2006 to 28 July 2011. In these vehicles, the outer frame adhesive for the sunroof could become weak due to inappropriate resin material such that the sunroof glass could detach from the frame while driving – this posed a collision risk to other road users and an injury risk to vehicle occupants. For the VINs of the recalled Mitsubishi ZG/ZH Outlander vehicles, please see PRA 2018/16622.

2008-13 Mitsubishi ZG/ZH Outlander: drive belt could disconnect

In February 2018, a recall was issued for 2008-12 ‘model year’ Mitsubishi ZG and ZH Outlander vehicles that were available for sale from 16 April 2008 to 23 January 2013. In these vehicles, the engine’s automatic tensioner flange could crack under high load driving conditions and this could cause the drive belt to fall off. If the drive belt fell off, the engine warning light would illuminate, power steering assistance would be lost, the battery would discharge and the engine may overheat and stall. For the VINs of the recalled Mitsubishi ZG/ZH Outlander vehicles, please see PRA 2018/16621.

2006-10 Mitsubishi ZG/ZH Outlander 2.4i: clicking noise from CVT

In February 2015, Mitsubishi Motors issued Technical Service Bulletin TSB-15-23-003 for 2006-10 Mitsubishi ZG/ZH Outlander vehicles that were manufactured prior to 1 October 2010 and had continuously variable transmissions (CVTs). In these vehicles, a clicking noise that increased in frequency with vehicle speed (but not engine speed) could be heard in the passenger compartment. Due to engine and road noises, however, the sound typically could not be heard at vehicle speed above 60 km/h. To fix, the CVT was to be removed so that two primary pulley shaft bearings and one secondary pulley shaft bearing could be replaced.

2006-11 Mitsubishi ZG/ZH Outlander 2.4i: oil leak from front crankshaft seal

In November 2016, Mitsubishi Motors issued Technical Service Bulletin 16-11-003 for 2006-11 Mitsubishi ZG/ZH Outlander vehicles with 2.4-litre 4B12 petrol engines. In these vehicles, oil may leak from the front oil seal on the crankshaft due to foreign material damaging the front main lip of the seal. In July 2010, the design of the front oil seal was changed to prevent foreign material entering the seal. Furthermore, an additional rib was added to the oil seal in May 2011 to prevent foreign material from entering the seal.

Technical Service Bulletin 16-11-003 instructed dealers to inspect the front oil seal for leakage and, if confirmed, to replace the front oil seal. Dealers were then to inspect and clean the rubber of the crankshaft pulley, and replace the crankshaft pulley if the rubber was damaged.

Problems and faults: Mitsubishi Mk.2 Outlander

  • In cold weather, the Outlander’s engine may not start due to problems with several relays. Improved relays were subsequently released to correct this problem – these can be identified by their green cover.
  • Clunking noises from the front end during parking manoeuvres may be fixed by replacing the front wheel bearings.
  • Hesitation or lack of throttle response when accelerating from slow speeds requires the engine control module (ECM) program to be updated.
  • Similarly, rough idling in cool temperatures may be fixed by updating the ECM program.
