Mercedes-Benz OM628 and OM629 engines (2000-10)

The Mercedes-Benz OM628 and OM629 were V8 turbo-diesel engines. Released in 2000, the OM628 was first used in the W220 S 400 CDI, followed by the W211 E 400 CDI, G 400 CDI and W163 ML 400 CDI. The OM629 engine was available from 2005 and used increased boost pressure for higher power and torque outputs.

The 3996 cc OM628 and OM629 engines had 86.0 mm bores and strokes, 97.0 mm cylinder spacing, 75-degree ‘V’ angles, cast aluminium blocks with cast iron cylinder liners, common-rail direct injection, variable geometry turbochargers for each cylinder bank, air-water intercoolers, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder actuated via hydraulic tappets, cooled exhaust gas recirculation, electric intake air throttling and a balancer shaft between the cylinder banks.

While the OM628 engine was fitted with GT1749V turbochargers and had a compression ratio of 18.5:1, the OM629 engine had GTB1752VK turbochargers and a compression raito of 17.0:1.
